Marathon, the highly anticipated extraction shooter from Bungie, is set to launch this fall.
Bungie
Marathon is Bungie’s eagerly awaited extraction shooter, and the studio has just released a new gameplay overview trailer along with a launch date: September 23, 2025. In this game, you assume the role of a Runner, a cybernetic humanoid tasked with exploring the ruins of the planet Tau Ceti IV to uncover its mysteries and collect as much loot as possible.
The reveal was made through an alternate reality game, where thousands of community members worked together to uncover the release date. Long-time Bungie fans may recall that Halo 2 had a similar announcement method through the famous I Love Bees campaign. Additionally, Bungie has announced a closed alpha test scheduled to begin on April 23, 2025. Interested participants can join the community Discord for a chance to register.
“In Marathon, players take on the role of a Runner, a cybernetic mercenary searching the remnants of a lost colony on Tau Ceti IV for wealth and power. Players will form crews of three to compete against rival Runner teams and hostile security forces for weapons and upgrades. Survive, and everything they've scavenged will be theirs to keep for future missions on Tau Ceti IV—or, for the brave, a journey to the abandoned Marathon ship that looms overhead,” the team explained.
Bungie is renowned for the Halo and Destiny franchises, both of which share an exceptional gunplay experience that makes them a delight to play. The forthcoming Marathon serves as a sort of continuation of the original Marathon trilogy that debuted in 1994. If you are old enough to have enjoyed the original—or are curious enough to explore it now—you might have an inkling of the secrets that await on Tau Ceti IV.
The new Marathon certainly revives an old IP, albeit with a fresh twist. While Bungie hasn't explicitly stated the two titles are connected, it’s easy to draw parallels between them. Those who haven’t played the original won’t feel left out, but dedicated fans will notice references sprinkled throughout.
Marathon is set to launch on September 23 for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series and will feature full cross-play and cross-save capabilities. There has yet to be any announcement regarding whether it will be available on Game Pass at launch or not.

Silent Hill 2’s long-awaited remake is set to release just in time for Halloween.
The Silent Hill 2 remake developed by Bloober Team has showcased two new gameplay trailers and revealed its release date during PlayStation's State of Play presentation, followed by a Silent Hill Transmission stream. Players will return to Silent Hill on October 8 for both PS5 and PC.
The first new trailer provided a glimpse of both gameplay and cinematics from the game, mainly focusing on James and Angela. This marked the first true look at the new actors and the cinematic approach for the game, although the gameplay segments were heavily edited. The trailer featured many of the game's signature monsters, including nurses and armless figures, along with notable locations like the hospital and the prison.
Bungie has shared plans for a major overhaul of Destiny 2: The Final Shape following recent mass layoffs.
Following the layoff of approximately 100 staff members earlier this week, Bungie has released a blog update acknowledging the situation and hinting at significant changes for Destiny 2's next major DLC, The Final Shape. On Monday, October 30, Bungie made substantial staff reductions across various departments, including community, QA, audio, and more. According to IGN, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons attributed Destiny 2's declining performance in 2023 as a contributing factor. A report from Bloomberg indicated that Bungie's upcoming projects have been internally delayed, with The Final Shape now quietly pushed to June 2024.
Amid layoffs at Destiny's developer and Sony subsidiary Bungie, both Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Marathon have reportedly experienced delays.
On Monday morning, tweets from developers revealed that Bungie was undergoing layoffs following its acquisition by Sony in January 2022. A subsequent Bloomberg report shed more light on the impact of these layoffs on Bungie's future titles. While Sony and Bungie have not publicly commented on the delays yet, the Bloomberg article mentions that Bungie CEO Pete Parsons will hold a team meeting to further discuss the layoffs. This comes after contractor layoffs at Sony’s Naughty Dog studio earlier this month, where the studio is facing challenges in developing and releasing a multiplayer game for The Last of Us.
Bloomberg suggested that these layoffs, similar to others at Sony this year, are connected to internal game delays. While Destiny 2: The Final Shape is currently scheduled for release in February 2024, Bungie reportedly informed staff that it would now be released in June 2024. Furthermore, the revival of Marathon was aim for a 2024 launch—though no official release timeline was
