5 sci-fi films on Netflix you should check out in April 2025.
Black Mirror season 7, Netflix’s most prominent sci-fi series, is making its comeback this month, presenting more harsh insights into the perils of technology. One of the episodes serves as a sequel to USS Callister, the Emmy-winning sci-fi saga that marked the beginning of season 4. Since this episode is essentially a mini-movie, we’ve included it in our list of must-watch sci-fi for this month.
Our other four selections are standard films. One is a low-budget cyberpunk thriller, while the other boasts a $300 million budget. You'll be surprised to find out which one stands out as the better film. You can see the complete list below.
Additionally, we offer guides for the best new movies to stream, top films on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, and Disney+.
**Lucy (2014)**
*Universal Pictures*
In Lucy, Scarlett Johansson transforms into the world’s most powerful intellect. After being forced to transport illegal substances for a crime lord, the titular character (Johansson) is abducted and serves as a drug mule. When the package inside her body explodes, it releases toxins into her bloodstream.
Instead of perishing, Lucy acquires extraordinary powers—telepathy, telekinesis, and the ability to travel through time mentally. She harnesses these abilities to seek revenge. As Lucy’s power escalates, her stability diminishes, prompting her to seek assistance from a renowned neurologist (Morgan Freeman). While the film’s rationale may be flawed, it allows Johansson to portray a strong action heroine outside of the MCU.

**The Electric State (2025)**
*Netflix / Netflix*
The Electric State is definitely not winning over critics, who have offered harsh reviews. It might not even appeal to viewers, but the decision is yours to make. In this divisive '90s sci-fi adventure from the Russo Brothers, Millie Bobby Brown stars as Michelle, a teenager orphan living with her foster father in a retro-futuristic version of the USA.
One day, a sentient robot named Cosmo (Alan Tudyk) persuades Michelle that her brother is still alive. Together, Michelle and Cosmo journey West to find her missing brother. Along the way, they join forces with a drifter named Keats (Chris Pratt) and discover that a sinister organization may be responsible for the rift between humans and robots.

**Geostorm (2017)**
*Warner Bros.*
Hurricanes, tornadoes, and tsunamis are not challenging enough for Gerard Butler. Instead, the action star seeks something larger, like a meteorological disaster with extinction-level consequences, i.e., a geostorm. In the film sharing the storm’s name, Butler plays Jake Lawson, the architect behind Dutch Boy, a global satellite system that controls the weather.
Years later, Dutch Boy falls into the wrong hands, creating chaos on Earth. While Jake attempts to resolve the crisis in space, his brother Max (Jim Sturgess) races against time to uncover who is orchestrating the events on Earth. This movie is pure disaster entertainment at its finest. Think of Geostorm as a younger sibling to Armageddon and Independence Day.

**USS Callister: Into Infinity (2025)**
*Nick Wall / Netflix*
Is Black Mirror classified as a TV series? Yes. However, some episodes extend to feature-film length and might be regarded as films. This applies to USS Callister, a Star Trek tribute about a disregarded computer programmer, Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), who creates digital replicas of his colleagues and traps them in a space-themed adventure game.
USS Callister received the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie, and now there’s a sequel titled USS Callister: Into Infinity. With Daly no longer alive, Captain Nanette Cole (Cristin Milioti) and her crew continue navigating the virtual universe. They now face a struggle for survival against millions of other players.

**Upgrade (2018)**
*Universal Pictures*
Between The Invisible Man and Upgrade, Leigh Whannell has carved a niche in the sci-fi realm. While Upgrade did not achieve the same financial success as The Invisible Man, this cyberpunk thriller offers an engaging and tension-filled 100-minute experience.
Set in 2046, Gray Trace and his wife are involved in a deadly car accident, leaving her dead after being shot by four men amid the wreck. Gray survives but becomes a quadriplegic. A tech mogul grants Gray a new lease on life with a STEM implant chip that restores his control over his limbs. With the chip in place, Gray pursues the men who killed his wife, uncovering a technological conspiracy that jeopardizes his very existence.
