More clickers are on the way. HBO has officially confirmed the renewal of its acclaimed series The Last of Us for a third season, just ahead of the premiere of season 2.
This announcement isn't unexpected, given the immense popularity of The Last of Us season 1. The series launch attracted 4.7 million viewers across both linear and HBO Max platforms, marking it as the second-largest debut since 2010, following House of the Dragon. Throughout its eight-episode first season, The Last of Us consistently increased its viewership, culminating in 8.2 million viewers for the season 1 finale.
“We approached season two with the aim of creating something we could be proud of,” stated Craig Mazin, co-creator of The Last of Us. “The final results have surpassed even our highest expectations, thanks to our ongoing collaboration with HBO and the remarkable efforts of our exceptional cast and crew. We are eager to continue the narrative of The Last of Us with season three!”
Neil Druckmann, Mazin’s co-creator, expressed, “Seeing The Last of Us come to life with such beauty and fidelity has been a pinnacle of my career, and I am thankful for the fans' passionate and overwhelming support.”
Season 2 of The Last of Us takes place five years after the conclusion of the first season, as Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, and Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, find themselves “entangled in conflict with one another and within a world that is even more perilous and unpredictable than what they previously faced.”
Returning cast members for season 2 include Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria. New cast members include Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O'Hara will appear as a guest star.
The Last of Us season 2 will debut at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, April 13, on HBO and Max, and will comprise seven episodes.
