Among critics and certain Star Wars enthusiasts, Andor season 1 has been deemed the finest installment in the franchise thus far, surpassing even The Mandalorian. This sentiment intensified following the less favorable reception of The Mandalorian season 3 compared to its first two seasons. Nevertheless, Andor creator Tony Gilroy asserts there is no rivalry between the two series, arguing that Andor owes its existence to The Mandalorian. “The success of The Mandalorian provided us with the foundation to build upon,” Gilroy stated in an interview with Empire Magazine. “Their triumph is what propels the whole endeavor. Without Baby Yoda, there would be no Andor. Seriously. We are fully aware of that.”

Gilroy also dismissed any rumors of tension between himself and The Mandalorian creators Jon Favreau and Lucasfilm’s chief creative officer Dave Filoni. “Online, people constantly try to create division between us, as well as between [Jon] Favreau and [Dave] Filoni,” Gilroy mentioned. “It’s awful what people say; it’s unfortunate. The reality is, we can't have a show without them. They provided us with the strength to move forward.”

Next year, The Mandalorian will expand into theaters with The Mandalorian & Grogu, while Andor season 2 will mark the conclusion of this Rogue One prequel series. Diego Luna, who plays Cassian Andor in the series, shared with SFX Magazine that the show’s finale will seamlessly transition into the beginning of Rogue One. “If you have your DVD or Blu-ray of Rogue One, you should watch it right after the season ends, and you’ll see a movie that will be recontextualized,” Luna explained. “You will perceive it differently, having received so much information you didn’t have before. You didn’t know anything about this group of Rebels who came together for such a sacrifice, and now we’ve created a show of 24 episodes focusing on one of them. I truly believe it’s going to enhance the experience because it’s now filled with answers – almost more than you even sought when you watched Rogue One.”

Andor season 2 is set to premiere with three episodes on Disney+ on April 22.

Andor creator states that season 1’s success has provided him with complete creative freedom

Upon its debut in late 2022, Andor's first season quickly established itself as one of the most highly acclaimed Star Wars entries of Lucasfilm's Disney era. The series garnered eight Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. According to Andor creator Tony Gilroy, the overwhelmingly positive reception of the Rogue One prequel has been instrumental in persuading Disney and Lucasfilm to support his vision for its second and final season.

In an interview with Empire, Gilroy remarked, “The critical appreciation of the show has been extremely helpful, if not crucial, in getting Disney to agree to the budget for this project.” Reportedly, Andor season 1 had a substantial budget of $250 million, and based on Gilroy's statements, it appears the second season will have a similar or higher budget. Unlike several other blockbuster shows of recent years, many Andor fans would argue that the financial investment in the first season was well utilized and visible across all its episodes.

Andor season 2 will unveil the origins of a significant Star Wars location

Andor season 2 is set to be an even grander space adventure than the first. In a recent conversation with Empire, Diego Luna, who portrays Cassian Andor, hinted that the critically acclaimed Star Wars series would visit even more locations and planets in its upcoming season than in the first. “We’re traveling through space more than ever — the number of planets and sets you will see,” Luna promised. “There will be some familiar and new settings.”

According to Andor creator Tony Gilroy, the second season will even explore one of the most pivotal locations in Star Wars lore: Yavin 4, the moon that served as the Rebel Alliance’s base during the destruction of the first Death Star as depicted in Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. “I mean, we have to end up in Yavin, right?” Gilroy teased. “So, we’ll tell the story of Yavin. No one has tackled Yavin quite like we will.”

Five years ago, The Mandalorian revitalized Star Wars

It is a reality of Hollywood filmmaking that as a franchise continues, it tends to gather more complexity — both culturally and canonically. In recent years, Hollywood studios have attempted to overlook this, but Star Wars serves as a clear example. Once considered the crown jewel of franchises, it has evolved into a troubled entity beset by creative challenges, toxic fandom,
