Jenna Ortega discusses her departure from Scream 7.
In the fall of 2023, Jenna Ortega announced her exit from the Scream franchise reportedly due to scheduling conflicts with the second season of Wednesday. News of Ortega's departure surfaced shortly after her on-screen sister, Melissa Barrera, was dismissed from Scream 7 following remarks she made about the conflict in Gaza. There were also claims that Ortega left the project due to a salary disagreement. Now, Ortega has explained her reasons for not returning as Tara Carpenter, a role she played in the previous two Scream films.
“It wasn’t related to pay or scheduling,” Ortega stated in an interview with The Cut. “The situation with Melissa was unfolding, and everything seemed to be falling apart… If Scream 7 wasn’t going to involve that team of directors and the people I had grown fond of, then it didn’t feel like the right career move for me at that moment.”
Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin of Radio Silence had previously stepped down as directors of Scream 7 before Barrera's firing. Their replacement, Christopher Landon, also exited the film after Ortega and Barrera left the project. Consequently, Kevin Williamson — the original screenwriter of Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4 — was appointed as the new director of Scream 7.
Neve Campbell, who declined to participate in Scream 6 due to a salary disagreement, will reprise her role as Sydney Prescott in Scream 7. Isabel May from 1883 will portray Sydney’s daughter in the film, while Courteney Cox will return as Gale Weathers, one of the few remaining survivors from the original film. Scream 7 is scheduled for release in theaters on February 27, 2026.

In the trailer for Scream VI, Ghostface makes his way to New York City, causing chaos among the survivors of Scream V. After enduring the latest Ghostface killings, Sam Carpenter (played by Melissa Barrera) and her half-sister, Tara Carpenter (played by Jenna Ortega), escape Woodsboro for New York City to begin anew. They are joined by twins Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding), who also survived the attacks.
A Minecraft Movie had an exceptionally successful opening weekend, earning $301 million globally and $157 million in the United States alone. It has already exceeded its $150 million production budget and is poised to surpass the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which currently holds the record for the highest-grossing animated film. Despite an initially lukewarm reception from earlier trailers, A Minecraft Movie appears to have turned things around. Featuring a cast that includes Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge, and directed by Jared Hess, known for cult classics like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, the film revolves around Steve, the main character from the game (played by Jack Black), and a group of four misfits who are transported to the Overworld through a portal. If you're familiar with Minecraft, most of the film's elements will resonate with you.
