Move over, Wordle: The New York Times introduces a new puzzle game
The New York Times has launched its next game in the catalog following Wordle's ongoing success — this one focuses on mathematics. Digits tasks players with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers. You can currently play its beta version for free online.
In Digits, players receive a target number to achieve. They are provided with six numbers and can add, subtract, multiply, or divide them to get as close to the target as possible. Not every number needs to be used, making this game a challenge for your math skills as you combine numbers to formulate the right equations and approach the target number.
Players will earn a five-star rating if they match the target number exactly, three stars if they come within 10, and one star for being within 25 of the target number. Presently, there are also five different puzzles available, featuring progressively larger numbers. I tackled today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-focused game that should appeal to those who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times games such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article announcing Digits and explaining The New York Times Games team’s development process, The Times stated that the team would utilize this free beta to fix bugs and determine if progressing into a more active development phase — where the game's code and design are finalized — is warranted. So, play Digits while you can; The New York Times may pivot away from this project if they do not see the desired response.
Digits' beta is currently free to play on The New York Times Games' website.

If you logged into Twitter exactly one year ago, you likely remember the moment your feed began filling up with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Although it launched in 2021 and gained significant popularity in December of that year, Wordle quickly became a cultural phenomenon in early 2022, almost impossible to escape even with muted words. It represented a unique success story in gaming, reaching a wide audience thanks to its simplicity.
Wordle's success surged as rapidly as its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced its acquisition of the puzzle game from creator Josh Wardle in a low-seven-figure deal that was not disclosed — a surprising move that nearly overshadowed Sony’s recent announcement of acquiring Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2. This acquisition raised concerns
