This legendary animated franchise is set to have a Netflix live-action television series.
It seems we've encountered another intriguing mystery!
On Tuesday, Netflix revealed that a live-action Scooby-Doo series is in the works for the streaming platform. This series will offer a contemporary reimagining of the classic animated characters from Hanna-Barbera. The storyline will serve as an origin tale for Mystery, Inc., the group of teenage detectives who uncover local crimes. The team is made up of Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and their talking Great Dane, Scooby-Doo.
Set during the summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, the series will feature friends Shaggy and Daphne as they delve into a “haunting mystery” involving Scooby-Doo, the Great Dane who might have been a witness to a supernatural murder. According to Netflix's synopsis, “Along with the logical and scientific local, Velma, and the quirky, yet undeniably attractive new boy, Freddy,” the group embarks on a quest to solve a case that draws each of them into a frightening nightmare that threatens to reveal all their secrets.

Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg will serve as showrunners and executive producers under their company, Midnight Radio. Additional executive producers include André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner from Midnight Radio, along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions through Warner Bros. Television.
Scooby-Doo first debuted in 1969, created by writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, with Hanna-Barbera producing the animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! for CBS’s Saturday morning cartoon lineup. The characters Scooby and the four teenagers appeared in numerous animated television shows and films.
In 2002, Warner Bros. released Scooby-Doo, a live-action film directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn. The cast included Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Linda Cardellini as Velma, and Neil Fanning as the voice of Scooby-Doo. This film led to a sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, in 2004.
Marvel has put development on hold for three television shows, including Nova and Strange Academy.
Marvel is slowing down three television projects. According to Deadline, the development of Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. has been paused by Marvel Television. These projects had not yet been greenlit, and the studio has "merely shifted its focus at this time." The three shows remain alive and could be developed later.
Marvel is continuing to adapt its strategy in a Hollywood landscape changed by strikes. Several projects will be developed, with showrunners assigned to each. However, not every project that gets developed will come to fruition.
Disney CEO Bob Iger shared his emphasis on quality over quantity for Marvel during a May 2024 earnings call. Iger mentioned, “We’re gradually going to reduce the volume to about two TV series a year instead of the four that we’ve been producing and cut our film output from about four a year to two, or a maximum of three," as he conveyed to investors via Variety.
Among the three halted shows, Nova was the most advanced. In March 2022, Marvel Studios hired Sabir Pirzada to write the Nova series. Nova, whose real name is Richard Rider, is part of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps. Marvel replaced Pirzada with Ed Bernero in December 2024. The series was intended for release on Disney+.
The other two shows, Strange Academy and Terror, Inc., had been rumored to be in development. Strange Academy was centered around a school established by Doctor Strange for gifted children learning to control their supernatural abilities. Terror, Inc. focused on the antihero Terror, who utilizes others’ body parts for his benefit.
Marvel's live-action television lineup for 2025 kicks off with Daredevil: Born Again on March 4. Ironheart is set to premiere in June, with Wonder Man streaming in December.
In a related note, a director has finally been appointed for the live-action Street Fighter movie.
Kitao Sakurai has been selected to direct Street Fighter, a live-action film by Legendary Entertainment based on the classic Capcom video game, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Sakurai takes over from Danny and Michael Philippou, who were previously in consideration for the position but opted to focus on their project Bring Her Back. Details regarding the plot remain undisclosed.
