Apple recently revealed the production process behind Severance on Mac, and – spoiler alert – Ben Stiller is a fan.
Severance Apple
Initially, Ben Stiller informed us that there wouldn't be another three-year wait for the next season of Severance, and now he’s revealing insightful details about its production. It’s primarily Severance’s supervising editor and three-time Emmy Award nominee, Geoffrey Richman, who is sharing all the technical aspects – but it's clear that Stiller enjoys collaborating with Apple. Richman is fully onboard with Apple and utilizes a mix of his iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro for editing the show.
Speaking about the capability of his setup, he noted: “While cutting the marching band scene [from the season 2 finale], there were around 70 angles and takes to consider, so we synced them all into one multicam clip with grids of nine [3×3 arrays].”
“Being able to run nine angles simultaneously in real time and quickly switch between various options greatly facilitated finding what we needed at any point in time.”
When it comes to editing Severance, Richman emphasizes the importance of connectivity. This ensured a seamless workflow, allowing him to work fluidly. Richman highlighted: “I can work on my laptop or iMac at different locations, like the post facility or Ben’s office. As long as I’m logged into my account, everything I do appears everywhere.” At one point, he even went to where Ben Stiller was staying and connected his MacBook to the TV to work on the edit right then and there.
Regarding the marching band scene, music and the score were developed concurrently with filming. Composer Shapiro would send music, which Richman listened to on his iPhone and AirPods Pro no matter where he was. Organizing the marching band footage took over a week due to the numerous angles available, offering hundreds of potential cuts for the scene. “I definitely took notes on my iPhone and then — to change my perspective — I’d work on my MacBook Pro, devising ideas while sitting on my couch or in bed before bringing those ideas back to my iMac,” Richman recounted.
