It’s a notable footnote in Jenna Ortega's career that she made her film debut in Iron Man 3 with a very brief cameo that featured no dialogue. While many performers at Ortega’s level would eagerly join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she is satisfied with that being her solitary MCU role.

“It was one of the first jobs I ever did,” Ortega shared with Entertainment Tonight. “They cut all my lines. I appear in Iron Man 3 for just a second. I occupy the frame, I have one leg, and I’m the vice president’s daughter.”

Ortega briefly portrays the daughter of Vice President Rodriguez (Miguel Ferrer), and her silent cameo visually indicates that she has only one leg, suggesting that her father colluded with the film’s antagonist to help her regain full mobility using the Extremis technology.

Ortega recorded lines for the film, which ultimately did not make the final cut. Her character is not even credited by name in the film, a fact Ortega remembers well.

"They even took my name away,” Ortega remarked. “I regard that as my MCU appearance, and then I move on.”

Ironically, during Ortega’s 2023 appearance on Saturday Night Live, she appeared in a parody skit of X-Men dressed as Rogue.

It remains possible that Ortega may reconsider taking on a superhero role in the MCU in the future. However, at present, her schedule is packed with Netflix’s Wednesday and her upcoming film, Death of a Unicorn, where she stars alongside the MCU's Paul Rudd as her on-screen father. She is also in discussions to star in and produce a remake of Single White Female.

The once powerful Marvel brand has faced significant challenges recently. Although the studio's latest film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, broke records with over $120 million in its opening weekend, it received largely unfavorable reviews from critics and audiences, leading to steep declines in attendance in the following weeks. The Paul Rudd/Jonathan Majors threequel is among the rare Marvel films to earn less than its predecessors, prompting some outlets, including Variety and Digital Trends, to openly question the value of the brand. Is Hollywood's most successful studio finally facing audience fatigue?

This question was addressed, somewhat unexpectedly, by Disney's CEO Bob Iger, who recently spoke at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. Concerning Marvel, Iger commented that "sequels typically worked well for us. Do we need a third or fourth, for instance? Or is it time to explore other characters?” It’s a rhetorical question, as the esteemed executive is openly challenging Marvel's traditionally profitable strategy of producing threequels (from 2013's Iron Man 3 to last month's Quantumania) and the rare fourquel (2022's poorly received Thor: Love and Thunder). But is he correct? And if he isn't, what should Marvel’s strategy be after facing an unusual and very public setback?

Although Sony's 2002 blockbuster Spider-Man significantly contributed to bringing superhero cinema to mainstream audiences, the studio's subsequent films starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield did not achieve the same success. Ultimately, after gaining its own considerable momentum, Marvel negotiated to incorporate Spider-Man into its cinematic universe, casting Tom Holland as Peter Parker. Following two hugely successful films, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sony and Marvel demonstrated that collaboration can yield significant rewards.

The two studios are on the brink of releasing the third Spider-Man film, set for release on December 17, 2021, titled
