**Crimson Tide**
Gene Hackman is celebrated as one of cinema's great stars, and for good reason. In *Crimson Tide*, which features Hackman alongside Denzel Washington as two officers on a nuclear submarine with a serious disagreement about whether to launch their missiles, the film is both gripping and surprisingly intimate.
Most of the film’s action unfolds on the submarine, with many of its most impactful scenes being intense verbal confrontations between the two lead characters, who fundamentally disagree on the importance of following orders. Washington plays the hero, and he’s one of the rare actors capable of matching Hackman’s intensity for over 90 minutes. The outcome is a tense action movie that contains fewer dramatic moments than one might expect.
You can watch *Crimson Tide* on Amazon Prime Video.
**The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1967)**
*The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly* is widely regarded as a standout in the Western genre, but its monumental acclaim can feel somewhat daunting.
The good news is that this film is actually quite accessible. Clint Eastwood’s Man with No Name has become an iconic figure, and the movie’s climactic shootout is considered one of the greatest in cinematic history. Equally important, however, are the three hours leading up to it, during which we come to understand how each character has reached this moment.
You can watch *The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly* on Amazon Prime Video.
**Challengers (2024)**
Tennis has been featured in a variety of notable films, but perhaps none is as impressive as *Challengers*. This movie follows a trio of young tennis stars involved in a love triangle as they grow older, exploring themes of love, competition, and personal motivations. Importantly, it is also a fantastic film centered around tennis. Zendaya, Mike Faist, and particularly Josh O’Connor all deliver strong performances.
Director Luca Guadagnino fully embraces the dynamic visual style of the sport. *Challengers* is an entertaining romantic dramedy that is precisely the type of film we should receive at least four times a year.
You can watch *Challengers* on Amazon Prime Video.
