Snapchat is introducing generative AI videos to its social platform. Today, the company launched what it refers to as Video Gen AI Lenses, which effectively integrate an AI-driven video effect into your Snaps. Currently, these new video AI lenses are available exclusively to users within the Platinum subscription tier, priced at $14.99 per month.

According to Snap's press release, “These Lenses, powered by our own generative video model, bring some of today’s most advanced AI tools to Snapchatters in a familiar Lens format.”

In this initial stage, there are only three AI video lenses accessible to paying subscribers. The Raccoon lens populates your video with several furry raccoons, while the Fox preset features a curious red fox peering over your shoulder.

Additionally, there is a Spring Flowers lens, which introduces a variety of photorealistic flowers in different colors with a zoom-out effect for your Snaps. While the current selection is limited, the company promises that new video AI lenses will be added weekly.

It remains uncertain whether Snapchat will eventually allow users to create their own video AI lenses. The platform already provides a free tool called Lens Studio, enabling users to craft their own lenses and custom face filters to share with others globally.

Snap offers generative AI features within the Lens Studio, allowing anyone to develop custom lenses using text or image prompts, similar to instructing Gemini or ChatGPT to generate an image based on text descriptions. Notably, it includes a built-in AI assistant to support users with their projects.

How do Snapchat’s video Gen AI Lenses function?

      Snap

As stated earlier, a Snapchat+ Platinum subscription is necessary to utilize the AI video lenses. This tier provides an ad-free experience throughout the Lens and Story sections, avoiding any sponsored Snaps as well.

These new generative AI video lenses will be the first options displayed when users open the Lens carousel in the Snapchat app. As usual, they can be used on media captured from both the front and back cameras.

While the AI videos are being processed, users can shift focus to other activities, such as messaging or recording new clips. When a Snap featuring AI video lenses is ready, it will be automatically saved in the Memories section.

Just like standard content, media with a video AI Lens can be freely included in Stories and the Spotlight section or directly shared with friends.

To clarify, Lenses differ from Filters. Lenses apply various augmented reality (AR) effects to Snaps, whereas Filters provide an artistic color overlay on your photos and videos.

The Snapchat app offers two types of lenses: Face Lenses, which transform users’ faces into fun characters, like a cute puppy or a flower crown, and World Lenses, which add animated effects to the surroundings.
