Copilot is set to enhance gaming experiences, and it's soon arriving for Xbox users. Fatima Kardar, Xbox's Corporate Vice President of Gaming AI, showcased its functionalities on the Official Xbox Podcast, demonstrating how the tool can assist players in swiftly re-engaging with games without significant interruptions.
Many gamers are familiar with the scenario: returning to a game (like Skyrim) after a lengthy absence, completely lost about why they are wielding a flaming sword, what has agitated the townsfolk, or the origin of that hefty bounty. In more straightforward terms, they may have little recollection of the plot developments up to that moment.
When asked about a player's progress in Age of Empires IV, Copilot responded, “Last time, you were defending Tyre in the Sultans Ascend campaign and decided to confront the Franks, but … let’s just say it didn’t go as intended.” It continued with, “Your base was destroyed by the Beast after an unsuccessful head-on assault with your Turkic Horse Archers.”
Kardar noted that users can even tailor the level of sarcasm in Copilot's replies.
Another segment of the video showed a player seeking real-time Minecraft tips, although Copilot refused to answer certain queries until cheats were activated. Kardar remarked, “Gaming is the only form of entertainment where players can find themselves stuck, so it’s beneficial to have something available to assist them in overcoming that hurdle.”
In one instance, a player requested advice on defeating a particular enemy, and Copilot provided a series of responses and suggestions. However, Xbox did not disclose details regarding the data set, leaving questions about how Copilot generates its answers. In response to an inquiry from Digital Trends after the announcement, a Microsoft representative clarified that Copilot for Gaming utilizes publicly available information, though specific details were not provided.
“Like other Copilots, Copilot for Gaming draws from publicly available information on the web via the Bing search index and results, offering personalized responses based on the player’s activities and the games they are engaging with on the Xbox platform. Our aim is for Copilot for Gaming to present the most accurate game knowledge, so we are collaborating with game studios to ensure that the information Copilot offers aligns with their intentions, and it will direct players back to the original sources of information.”
Copilot holds significant potential for enhancing usability and accessibility. Kardar mentioned that the feature is available when needed but can be easily disregarded if not desired. Nonetheless, it raises privacy concerns regarding the extent of data access. A Microsoft representative told Digital Trends that players will have some control over their privacy settings.
“During this preview on mobile, players can choose how and when they wish to interact with Copilot for Gaming, whether to allow access to their conversation history, and what it can do on their behalf.”
