The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to avoid overheating during multitasking due to the inclusion of liquid cooling chambers. This rumor regarding the new design of the iPhone 17 comes from Chinese leaker Instant Digital, who stated on Weibo that both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature vapor cooling chambers to improve heat management. This follows two earlier reports indicating that this cooling technology would initially be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max and then made available across all iPhone 17 models. “It is confirmed that the 17 Pro/17 Pro Max will utilize steam cavity [vapor chamber] for heat dissipation,” Instant Digital noted. “The Pro model doesn’t use the knife method, and with the A19 Pro’s enhanced thermal management, it won’t significantly reduce frequency under high load and performance.”
Considering past overheating issues associated with previous iPhones, including the Pro models, it seems feasible for Apple to implement liquid cooling chambers in the iPhone 17 Pro. In our review of the iPhone 16 Pro, we observed that the device tends to heat up when switching between applications, particularly those related to work. The A18 Pro chip provides excellent performance but can cause overheating, regardless of the number of apps in use simultaneously. While the aluminum chassis with a graphite-clad aluminum substructure aids in heat dissipation, it remains insufficient as the glass display does not conduct heat effectively.
Conversely, the overheating problem with the iPhone 15 Pro was linked more to software than its design, with Apple stating that third-party apps were responsible for the overheating during operations. The company has since issued software updates to resolve this issue for both phones.
If the iPhone 17 Pro models indeed feature liquid cooling chambers, they are not expected to face overheating problems in the initial week or so of use. However, we will have to wait for more information from Apple.
