In the final days of his six-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), American astronaut Don Pettit shared an exquisite photograph that could easily be displayed in an art gallery.
This remarkable image was taken through a window of a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft docked at the ISS, depicting star trails and the lights of cities 250 miles below Earth.

Pettit has showcased various photos featuring star trails during his recent celestial mission, but this particular one stands out as one of his finest.
At 69, Pettit holds the title of NASA’s oldest active astronaut, and throughout his four space missions, he has evolved into a skilled space photographer, sharing his remarkable work with a large audience on social media.
A few months ago, he took a break from his busy routine to discuss his photography with Earthlings, which, in addition to star trails, includes images of a Crew Dragon spacecraft approaching Earth, a mesmerizing view of the Amazon Basin, and a breathtaking shot of an aurora.
Recently, he even captured the moment when SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft disintegrated during its eighth flight test of the most powerful rocket to ever launch.
“Images from space help narrate the story to people on Earth who may never have the chance to go into space,” Pettit remarked when asked about his passion for capturing photos from orbit. He noted that while each image serves as a distinct record of his space journey, “the photos contribute to the story of what it means for humanity to venture into space and explore this new frontier.”

Experience the incredible sensation of flying over an aurora
Astronauts stationed on the International Space Station (ISS) were recently treated to an extraordinary light display featuring an aurora shimmering above Earth.
NASA astronaut Don Pettit managed to capture this stunning event as the ISS soared over the aurora at an altitude of approximately 250 miles.
Astronaut’s ‘glowing fingernail clipping’ is actually the moon
Don Pettit continues his streak of impressive photos. Just days after unveiling a breathtaking image of Earth, the American astronaut followed up with an equally striking photo of a waning crescent moon, which Pettit humorously referred to as “a glowing fingernail clipping in the sky.”

Astronaut’s first photo of 2025 is a real stunner
NASA astronaut Don Pettit has kicked off 2025 with a stunning Earth photograph that he called a “New Year’s light show.”
He captured this incredible shot from the International Space Station (ISS), where he has been living and working since September as part of his fourth voyage into space.
