Google Messages is a fundamental app for any Android device, which is why it can be frustrating when it doesn't perform as expected. Recently, many users have reported various issues and sluggish performance. In response to these complaints, Google has announced that a fix is currently being deployed.

Many users have been facing a variety of problems while using Google Messages lately, particularly when trying to view photos and videos within the app. Frustrating RCS issues arise while loading attachments, leading to a considerable number of complaints. Users have observed that the app either slows down significantly or crashes completely; even when it remains operational, the media content still suffers. Some attachments fail to load entirely, others appear blurred, and many are non-interactive.

Google’s Monika Y, a community manager, addressed the situation and provided an update. Although the details are somewhat sparse, it appears Google is taking action.

“Our team has been actively addressing this, and we’ve recently released updates designed to enhance media reception performance significantly. We hope you will notice a clear improvement,” stated the Google representative. “However, we understand that issues can be complex, and we are dedicated to resolving them. Please continue to share your feedback with us.”

Monika also mentioned that Google is still seeking feedback to determine whether users are still encountering these issues following the updates.

According to The Verge, the fix is likely related to Google's systems, as there haven’t been any pending Android updates associated with it. Therefore, if you've been annoyed by Google Messages' media performance lately, it might be worth trying it again now—it could be functioning better.

Google's Gemini is becoming more sophisticated for iPhone users

Google's Gemini AI has received a significant upgrade for iPhone users with the introduction of its Deep Research feature. Initially rolled out for Android devices, this feature is gradually reaching iPhone users. If you haven’t seen it yet, just be patient; as of this writing, it hasn't appeared on our devices here at Digital Trends.

The Deep Research feature "utilizes advanced reasoning and long context capabilities to serve as a research assistant, delving into complex subjects and compiling reports on your behalf." This allows Gemini to conduct thorough and in-depth research on almost any topic, but be advised: the process is not instantaneous.

These dedicated Google Assistant car mics might be on the verge of being discontinued

If you use Google Assistant via the JBL Link Drive or Anker Roav Bolt, we have some unfortunate news: the microphones may soon be deactivated, based on code discovered in the Google app beta. The team at 9to5Google stumbled upon code snippets during an APK teardown that offered glimpses into the future of Google Assistant for vehicles.

The string titled "assistant_car_accessory_deprecation" states: "By the way, Google Assistant on your car accessory will be discontinued in the coming weeks. To continue using Assistant, invoke queries either on your mobile device or via Android Auto." These accessories were introduced in 2019 to allow drivers of older vehicles to access Google Assistant, meaning even the first users would have only had them for six years.

Google Messages may soon allow you to unsend awkward messages in RCS chats

Google Messages, the default messaging application on Android phones, might be introducing new features that enable users to unsend messages, similar to third-party messaging apps. The unsend feature is reportedly in testing and will apply to chats over the RCS protocol, which enhances traditional SMS with better multimedia, emoji, reactions, and more.

Currently, when you delete a message, it is only removed from your own device and does not affect other chat participants. Now, Google seems to be trialing a new "delete for everyone" feature for conversations that would remove messages for all users, akin to instant messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. 9to5Google has identified references to this functionality under development, suggesting that it could soon be accessible to a broader audience, though a specific timeline remains unclear.
