Asus' latest monitors not only show pixels but also purify the air.

Asus has launched a new range of monitors equipped with built-in air purification, merging display technology with benefits for environmental health. The VU Air Ionizer series consists of three models: the 23.8-inch VU249HFI-W, the 27-inch VU279HFI-W, and the 34-inch VU34WCIP-W. These displays feature an integrated “VU Air Ionizer,” which Asus claims can eliminate up to 90% of airborne dust and pollutants from a cubic meter within three hours. This functionality is designed to enhance air quality, especially for users in dusty settings, although the effectiveness of air ionization technology remains a topic of discussion.

The VU249HFI-W and VU279HFI-W utilize IPS panels with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, a refresh rate of 100Hz, and a 1ms MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time). They deliver a contrast ratio of 1300:1 with a brightness of 250 nits. In contrast, the VU34WCIP-W is equipped with a VA panel that offers a resolution of 3440 x 1440, a 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratio, a 100Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms MPRT. This model boasts a superior contrast ratio of 3000:1 and a brightness of 300 nits, making it ideal for deep blacks and high-contrast visuals. All three monitors include Adaptive Sync support with variable refresh rate capabilities.

Asus has set competitive prices for the monitors, starting at $129 for the VU249HFI-W, $159 for the VU279HFI-W, and $359 for the premium VU34WCIP-W. These models are now available for purchase through Asus’s official channels and select retailers.

In addition to air purification, the monitors feature SmoothMotion technology for smooth visuals and Color Vision Deficiency modes to assist users with color perception difficulties. They also promote sustainability through eco-friendly packaging that can be repurposed as document or laptop holders. While the incorporation of an air purifier is a distinctive feature, the actual efficacy of air ionization remains uncertain. Nonetheless, Asus’s VU Air Ionizer series presents an innovative approach to enhancing both display quality and workspace health.

LG isn’t waiting until January to introduce its next generation of OLED gaming monitors. The company has revealed three new displays that will join its lineup, along with updates to existing OLED gaming monitors. One model, in particular, distinguishes itself with a dual refresh rate capability that can reach up to 480Hz.

The UltraGear 32GS95UE is the highlight. It is a 4K OLED monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate, but LG states that users can switch to a 1080p resolution with a 480Hz refresh rate using a single click. This function can be mapped to a hotkey or a directional switch on the joystick, allowing quick transitions between high-resolution cinematic gaming and competitive settings.

In a different vein, I didn't have high expectations for the Asus ROG Strix Scope II 96. While I was impressed by the ROG Azoth earlier this year, I thought the Strix Scope II 96 was a step back; it appeared to be a more affordable gaming keyboard aimed at the mainstream without the enthusiast qualities of the Azoth. I'm pleased to admit I was wrong.

The Strix Scope II 96 may not compete with building a custom keyboard or many premium options from brands like Keychron, but it sets a new standard for what to expect from a mechanical gaming keyboard priced at $180. It features modern amenities like hot-swappable switches and three connection modes, and it also sounds and feels great straight out of the box—especially coming from someone who typically finds most mechanical gaming keyboards noisy and unpleasant.

When considering a laptop, it can be tempting to opt for the latest model. These are often widely available and marketed as cutting-edge. However, as someone who reviews numerous new laptops each year, I know a secret that laptop brands may not share: the latest version is frequently just a minor upgrade over the previous generation, often involving little more than a CPU swap. This means that if you can find the prior generation at a lower price, it may offer better value for your money. The trick lies in recognizing a minor spec upgrade versus significant improvements that warrant additional expense.
