If you have played The Last of Us or seen the HBO series with the same title, you are aware that Joel (Pedro Pascal) cares for Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as if she were his own daughter. He would go to great lengths, even kill, to keep her safe. This dilemma is at the heart of the emotional conflict in The Last of Us season 2, which draws from The Last of Us Part II. In the concluding scenes of HBO's newly released season 2 trailer, Ellie discovers just how far Joel went to protect her at the conclusion of season 1, indicating that their relationship will change forever.
Even before the truth is revealed, there are evident signs of tension between them in the footage, despite him gifting her a guitar and admiring her tattoo. Ellie is maturing in the relative safety of Jackson, Wyoming, and she has a new romantic interest, Dina (Isabela Merced), who shares a passionate kiss with her in the trailer. Nevertheless, Jackson isn't as secure as they had hoped, facing attacks on its walls. The infected individuals resulting from the Cordyceps virus are always a threat, but the real dangers for Joel and Ellie come from other humans.
This is where Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) plays a role. HBO has yet to showcase much footage of Dever's character, but Abby is a significant driving force in the narrative that this season is based on. She has her own motivations and is just as determined to achieve her goals as Joel and Ellie are. Additionally, a militia led by Isaac Dixon (Jeffrey Wright, reprising his role from the game) introduces even more significant challenges for Jackson and its residents.
HBO recently revealed six new cast members for season 2, including Joe Pantoliano as Eugene, whose character makes a brief appearance in the trailer. Eugene was only hinted at in the game with a photograph, and his character's role will be expanded in the series. As announced late last month, The Last of Us season 2 will premiere on HBO and Max on Sunday, April 13.

The Last of Us season 2: Everything we know so far
Video game adaptations have historically struggled to meet gamers' expectations for years. That’s why HBO’s The Last of Us is a breath of fresh air, effectively capturing the essence of the game it was inspired by while also standing as an artistic achievement in its own right. The series has transformed the perception of what a video game adaptation can be, primarily due to showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Mazin previously created the critically acclaimed Chernobyl miniseries for HBO, while Druckmann co-created The Last of Us video game franchise.
Fans will have to wait at least a few more months until The Last of Us season 2 premieres. With the show having completed filming in August, we can share everything we know about the upcoming season. Next season, the series continues to explore the story of Joel and Ellie, while also introducing key characters from the sequel, The Last of Us Part II.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Last of Us season 2.
Things are set to become larger, sadder, and — in some ways — darker in The Last of Us season 2. This should come as no surprise to those familiar with the divisive 2020 game, The Last of Us Part II, which surprised players with its shocking developments and unrelenting violence. Based on the recent trailer, it appears that season 2 will follow a similarly bleak trajectory as the original game.
The Last of Us season 2 teaser trailer: Joel, Ellie, and a multitude of clickers
There’s danger ahead for Joel and Ellie in HBO’s official teaser for The Last of Us season 2. Set to a haunting rendition of Pearl Jam’s Future Days, the teaser opens with a conflicted Joel (Pedro Pascal) attempting to confess a secret to a character played by Catherine O’Hara. This likely refers to Joel’s choice to kill a surgeon and several Fireflies who were attempting to perform surgery on Ellie to create a cure for the virus. The procedure would have potentially claimed Ellie’s life, so Joel’s actions saved her but postponed the opportunity for a cure.
Meanwhile, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is settling into life within the Jackson community five years after the events of season 1. However, the threat of clickers remains, as they gather and increase their numbers.
