Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has a new puzzle game.

Following the success of Wordle, The New York Times has released its latest game in the Games catalog, which focuses on math. In Digits, players are tasked with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers. You can currently play its beta version online for free.

In Digits, players receive a target number they must match. They are provided with six numbers and can use any combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to get as close to that target as possible. Not every number needs to be utilized, making this game a challenge for your math skills as you aim to create the correct equations.

Players earn a five-star rating for an exact match with the target number, three stars for being within 10, and one star for being within 25 of the target number. Currently, there are also access to five puzzles that increase in difficulty with larger numbers. I tried out today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable math-based challenge that will likely attract those who appreciate puzzle games like Threes or other titles from The New York Times, such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article introducing Digits and discussing the game development process by The New York Times Games team, it was mentioned that they will use this free beta to troubleshoot issues and evaluate whether to advance into a more active development phase “where the game is coded and designs are finalized.” So, take advantage of playing Digits while you can, as The New York Times may decide to discontinue the project if the response is not favorable.

Digits' beta is currently available for free play on The New York Times Games website.

If you logged onto Twitter exactly one year ago, you likely remember the moment your feed filled with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Although it launched in 2021 and gained popularity in December of that year, Wordle became a cultural sensation in early 2022 that was hard to escape without muting it. It represented a rare success in gaming, appealing to a wide audience due to its straightforward design.

Wordle's success skyrocketed alongside its user growth. In late January 2022, the New York Times revealed it had acquired the puzzle game from creator Josh Wardle in a confidential deal worth low seven figures — a surprising acquisition that nearly overshadowed
