Google, Oppo, Moto, and Honor are finally providing us with the AI we have been waiting for.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve grown weary of the term AI. When every company in the field adopts the term, it diminishes its significance, and I'm fatigued by more AI applications that I hardly engage with. Artificial intelligence was intended to simplify our lives, but the early phase of AI focused predominantly on generative applications. This has produced countless means, enabling anyone to express their creativity, while also ushering in an era of deepfakes that mobile manufacturers are hoping to remedy with AI.
However, the absence of a universally desired application means we are on the brink of entering the next phase of agentic AI. The distinction is crucial: the first phase centered on content creation, whereas the upcoming phase prioritizes AI’s ability to significantly ease your daily life.
I recently encountered five different instances of AI's future, and it's evident that we're finally about to realize the AI we've long envisioned.
Gemini Live

Google is advancing AI on smartphones for the hundreds of millions utilizing Gemini or partner AI solutions. The future of Google Gemini was showcased at the Android Avenue during MWC 2025, and what I observed was extremely thrilling.
First, AI is now addressing one of the major challenges since smart homes emerged: ensuring devices function harmoniously together. Instead of having to create complex routines on your own, you can simply prompt Gemini to handle that for you.
A demo illustrated a scenario where a dog pilfered a cookie from a kitchen counter. The user requested Gemini to review the footage to determine whether the culprit was the pet or the child. Following this, the demo demonstrated how to instruct Gemini to establish a routine where the lights would activate and a pre-recorded message would play on all speakers to intervene.
This is the type of AI feature I can envision my mother using, as is the preview of the upcoming Gemini Live. Soon, all Gemini Advanced customers will have the ability to share a screen with Gemini, and mobile users will also be able to utilize their phone camera to inquire about their surroundings.
The potential with these new functionalities is limitless, and I appreciate that Google is making them remarkably user-friendly. They are straightforward enough for anyone to use.
Moto AI and Smart Connect 2.0
Lenovo / Motorola Mobility
While Motorola didn't introduce any new hardware at MWC, it still showcased a range of new AI capabilities that will transform your phone usage.
The most significant of these is Smart Connect, aimed at enhancing the integration of all Android and Windows devices, not only those manufactured by Motorola and Lenovo. The ecosystem integration is among the best I've observed, rivaling Apple's.
Smart Connect allows you to connect a laptop, tablet, and phone together, unlocking a variety of new features. These features include effortless file transfers and screen mirroring. There are also clever AI functions, such as the ability to search for images, documents, and files across all connected devices and launch apps on one device using Moto AI from another.
Notably, Lenovo and Motorola are taking a different approach than many tech companies. Instead of restricting the feature to only their devices, it is designed to assist any Android or Windows user. This refreshing perspective is something I hope will signal a positive shift in the industry.
Real-time translation from Oppo, Honor, and Tecno

One of the AI applications that truly excites me is real-time translation. I used to excel at picking up new languages, but I'm in need of a refresher. However, I travel frequently and often require translators for meetings. I have long sought a solution that would facilitate seamless conversations while on the go, and Oppo, Honor, and Tecno unveiled new offerings that may bring this to fruition.

Oppo introduced the world's thinnest foldable device—the Oppo Find N5—just two weeks prior to MWC, focusing its presence during the event on its AI initiatives in collaboration with Google Gemini. The highlight of the AI Summit was the announcement of real-time translation for phone calls, set to roll out to users in the upcoming months. It's uncertain if this feature is exclusive to Oppo devices, but it promises substantial benefits for travel and work.

Honor also addressed the same need but with a distinct approach. While Oppo's translation feature is limited to phone calls, Honor's solution is aimed at live translation during conversations. Their innovative answer? The first open-ear earbuds, the Earbuds Open, which provide active noise cancellation and real-time translation. You can share one with the other person while wearing the other, enabling a conversation without requiring anyone else.
Tecno approached the same issue with a focus on business meetings rather than portability. Their new MegaBook S14 laptop includes the capability to translate conversations or business meetings in real time, allowing you to conduct business without needing human translators. Notably, it operates entirely
