The Nintendo eShop has gained a reputation for being filled with low-quality releases, quick cash grabs, and adult-themed games. However, the recent removal of numerous adult-oriented titles indicates that Nintendo may finally be taking steps to moderate the store more effectively. The change was first noticed by user Naruki, who tracks trends in the eShop.

Despite its reputation as a family-friendly platform, the Nintendo eShop has been inundated with an astonishing number of NSFW titles for quite some time. Since much of the eShop's operation is driven by algorithms, these games frequently show up as discounted or new releases. Although most of them carry age restrictions, the provocative thumbnails are concerning for parents.

This issue is not new; the Wii eShop also struggled with a surplus of low-quality titles. The current situation on the Nintendo Switch eShop is particularly troubling due to marketing tactics; by launching a new “edition” of a game and attaching terms like “Special,” “Ultimate,” or “Epic” to the title, the game is pushed back up to the top of the charts. This tactic is exploitative, aiming to generate more revenue from low-effort products.

RedDeer.Games is a significant contributor to this trend, publishing titles like Hentai Girls and Hot & Hentai, among others. Nonetheless, the studio also produces games that are more suitable for family or younger audiences. As of this writing, several of their titles—both SFW and otherwise—were discounted by as much as 96%, indicating a push for visibility, albeit one that does not benefit players.

It remains uncertain whether RedDeer.Games voluntarily removed the titles or if Nintendo intervened, but it's worth noting that many of the studio's SFW titles still showcase an excessive variety of superlative versions. The timing of these removals is questionable, especially with the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon. If Nintendo is indeed behind the enhanced moderation, it could signal positive changes for the eShop of the upcoming console. However, this situation raises the question of why it has taken Nintendo so long to address an issue that has persisted over multiple console generations.

Another Nintendo Switch emulator has shut down

In another instance of a Nintendo console emulator ceasing operations, the developers of the Ryujinx Switch emulator announced its shutdown via Discord. A message shared on X (formerly Twitter) by video game news aggregator Wario64 indicated that the lead developer, known as "gdkchan," was contacted by Nintendo and instructed to halt work on the project and eliminate all related assets under their control. Nintendo also proposed some kind of agreement, though the specific terms remain unclear.
