Sigil brings Dungeons and Dragons to life in an entirely new way.
Wizards of the Coast / Wizards of the Coast
Dungeons and Dragons is experiencing unprecedented popularity, and its virtual tabletop, aptly named Sigil, is now available for users. Sigil is characterized as an “immersive 3D virtual tabletop” that enables players to create custom maps, miniatures, and incorporate environmental effects. Imagine it as Roll20, but with an added physical dimension (not referring to an elemental plane).
In a blog post on the D&D Beyond website, Davyd Barker explains how Sigil functions and what is needed to get started. Registering for an account and experimenting with the tool is free; you only require a D&D Beyond account. This means it seamlessly integrates with D&D Beyond, allowing you to easily incorporate your existing characters. The download includes a foundational experience featuring a premade adventure, a starter builder kit, and the ability to participate in multiplayer games.
Sigil also offers unique spell effects. More visually striking magic illuminates the screen and enhances the impact of attacks, and every time dice are rolled, they are displayed onscreen for everyone to see. This fosters a more interactive environment where all players can celebrate fortunate rolls and express frustration over unfortunate outcomes.
Advanced features are available only through the Master Tier, which can be tried for free for 30 days. After that, it costs just $4.58 per month, which is actually cheaper than Roll20's pricing. This tier permits hosting up to 15 multiplayer rooms, saving an unlimited number of maps, and provides a significantly higher quantity of prepainted miniatures—83 to be precise—along with 60 unpainted minis and 21 custom mini outfits.
The Builder kits additionally offer more diverse options including Crude Mines, Graveyard, Owlbear Forest, and Rustic Village.
This is a complete release of the software, not a beta version. While there is still potential for growth, Wizards of the Coast has indicated that more features will be coming soon. It appears that the company intends to continue supporting Sigil for the foreseeable future, which is excellent news for players seeking a more immersive experience without the costs of battle maps, miniatures, and additional materials.
