James Gunn enjoys engaging with inquisitive fans on social media. However, his recent interaction may disillusion Harry Potter supporters.
Earlier this week, Jeff Sneider from The InSneider reported that Daniel Radcliffe is among the rumored contenders for a role in Clayface at DC Studios. Gunn noticed the speculation and took to Threads to clarify Radcliffe’s non-involvement. “As we confirmed recently, we’re finalizing a deal with James [Watkins] to direct,” Gunn stated on Threads. “Since we don’t have a director yet, the casting process hasn’t even started. Daniel is fantastic, but we certainly have not discussed or considered him. Therefore, this rumor is completely false.”
This wouldn't be the first instance of Radcliffe being fancast into a superhero role. There have been online rumors that he was in the running for the part of Wolverine in the X-Men series, which Radcliffe has consistently refuted.
As Gunn pointed out, James Watkins, known for directing Speak No Evil, is on the verge of securing a deal to helm Clayface for DC Studios. The screenplay was crafted by Mike Flanagan, but he was unable to direct due to his obligations with the new Exorcist film.
Clayface is a shape-shifting villain and one of Batman's main adversaries. However, Flanagan's version of Clayface is unlikely to serve as a means of confronting the Caped Crusader. Instead, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has described the film as a “body horror” project, with Gunn hoping it will resonate as a pure horror film for those who might not have any interest in DC.
Casting will commence shortly after Watkins formalizes his deal. According to Gunn, one actor who will not portray Clayface is Alan Tudyk, who provides the character's voice in Creature Commandos and Harley Quinn.
Filming for Clayface will kick off later this year, with the casting process starting soon after Watkins finalizes his deal. The film is set to premiere in theaters on September 11, 2026.

James Gunn aims for the DC Universe to steer clear of one of the MCU’s most significant pitfalls.
It’s still early for the DC Universe, which hasn’t even released its first film yet (that will be 2025's Superman) and is just about to launch its first TV show, an animated Suicide Squad spin-off called Creature Commandos. Nevertheless, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn already has distinct visions of what he hopes the DCU will become and what he wants to avoid.
In an interview with Collider, Gunn expressed his desire for the DCU’s interconnectivity to enhance, rather than inhibit, the franchise or make audiences feel obligated to do "homework" to keep up. "Much of what DC represents, and the enjoyment for me, lies in world-building rather than solely in story-building. I don't view the DCU as simply a narrative told across multiple films and shows about one central villain. I do not want the audience to have to undertake the homework of watching everything," Gunn elaborated. "It’s more of a connected universe that resides in one space, which is the DCU."
Peacemaker season 2 has finished filming, with James Gunn announcing the wrap-up on the superhero drama.
“And that is a WRAP on #Peacemaker season 2, including our last remaining actors Steve Agee, Tim Meadows, Sol Rodriguez & Brandon Stanley (& our DP Sam McCurdy pictured here moments after the last shot.),” Gunn wrote on X. "Thanks to our remarkable cast & crew who made this a fantastic experience. My relief at having a break from filming after ten continuous months is countered by how much I will miss all of you!”
A few days prior, Gunn dedicated a social media post to Peacemaker stars John Cena and Jennifer Holland to announce the completion of their scenes. He noted that he had recently had "one of the most enjoyable days of shooting" and thanked the people of Savannah for their warm hospitality.
Momentum has been gradually building for over a year for James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe. Although the franchise inspired by DC Comics has yet to officially launch, that moment will arrive when the eagerly awaited animated Suicide Squad spinoff series, Creature Commandos, debuts on December 5 on Max. Nonetheless, Gunn has already faced criticism from some comic book readers and superhero enthusiasts while also addressing various assertions.
The DC Studios co-CEO did so when a fan recently commented on Threads that Gunn's decision to greenlight projects about "niche" characters like Sgt. Rock and Swamp Thing gives the impression that he is only "creating the DC
