      I, Tonya (2017)

      Neon

Those who remember the early 1990s will recall the highly publicized rivalry between Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. The tension reached its peak following the infamous assault on Kerrigan and the ensuing investigation that damaged Harding’s image. This infamous incident is depicted in I, Tonya, Craig Gillespie’s underrated biopic.

Harding (played by Margot Robbie) grows up under the influence of an abusive mother, LaVona Golden (Allison Janney). As she enters her teenage years, Tonya emerges as one of the top skaters globally and trains for the Winter Olympics. Her life takes a turn when she meets her future husband, Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian), which changes everything. I, Tonya portrays Harding as a tragic figure in this surprisingly effective biopic, which features outstanding performances from Robbie and Janney, the latter winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Visceral, heartbreaking, and explosive. These three words capture the essence of The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow’s drama set during the Iraq War. Following the death of a sergeant, William James (Jeremy Renner) takes over as the leader of a bomb disposal team that includes Sergeant JT Stanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty).

James is highly skilled at dismantling bombs, but his reckless behavior quickly creates tension within the team. The action-packed film achieved an unexpected victory at the 2010 Oscars by winning Best Picture over Avatar. Additionally, Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win Best Director, surpassing her ex-husband James Cameron.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

      Sony

With the tagline “The Feel Bad Movie of Christmas,” The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is not suitable for a family movie night. This neo-noir film directed by David Fincher offers a compelling viewing experience for those in search of a savage thriller, featuring an Academy Award-nominated performance from Rooney Mara. Swedish journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) faces a damaged reputation due to the aftermath of a libel lawsuit.

Wealthy businessman Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) offers Blomkvist a chance at redemption. If Blomkvist investigates the 40-year-old case of his grandniece's disappearance, Vanger will provide evidence to help restore Blomkvist's name. Blomkvist agrees and enlists expert hacker Lisbeth Salander (Mara) as his partner. Together, they uncover family secrets that jeopardize their safety.
