NYT Connections: clues and solutions for Friday, February 28

Connections is one of the top puzzle games from the New York Times. The objective of the game is to categorize a set of 16 words into four secret groups by determining how the words are related. The puzzle resets nightly at midnight, and each new version can present different levels of difficulty. Similar to Wordle, players can track their winning streak and compare scores with friends.

Some puzzles can be more challenging than others, much like other favorites from NYT Games such as The Mini and Strands. If you’re having difficulty with today’s puzzle, you may want to refer to our guide for tips and strategies, or look at the hints provided for today’s Connections puzzle below. If you’re still stuck, we’ll reveal today’s answers at the end.

To enjoy Connections, you can visit the New York Times website or use the NYT Games app available on iOS or Android. In Connections, you will see a grid of 16 words — your goal is to organize these words into four sets of four by uncovering the connections that link them. These sets may include categories like names of video game series, sequels in book series, variations of red, or names of restaurant chains, among others.

Typically, there are words that might fit into several categories, yet there is only one completely correct combination. You can shuffle the grid to better visualize potential connections. Each group is color-coded, with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and then purple.

Select four words and click Submit. If you are correct, those words will disappear from the grid, and the theme connecting them will be displayed. Incorrect guesses count as mistakes, and you have a limit of four mistakes before the game concludes.

Who edits the NYT Connections game?

Wyna Liu, who has been editing puzzles at The New York Times since 2020, oversees Connections daily. “A few months ago, a new assignment came my way: Create the game boards for Connections, a category matching game that had recently received approval and was looking for an editor,” Liu shared in an article detailing her approach in June 2024. Most of my puzzle experience has been with crosswords, and I was eager for the opportunity to try something different. I have enjoyed learning how puzzle editing unfolds once a game is approved and observing how our team integrates into a broader ecosystem.”

On the first anniversary of Connections’ launch earlier this year, Liu shared a TikTok about her favorite puzzles thus far:
