Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has a new puzzle game
The New York Times has unveiled its next title in its Games catalog following the continued success of Wordle – and it revolves around math. Digits challenges players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can try its beta version for free online right now.
In Digits, players are given a target number to match. You receive six numbers and can add, subtract, multiply, or divide them to get as close to the target as possible. You don’t have to use every number, making this game a test of your math skills as you combine them and formulate the correct equations to reach the target number.
Players will earn a five-star rating for matching the target number exactly, a three-star rating if they fall within 10 of the target, and a one-star rating if they get within 25 of the target number. Currently, players can also access five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers. I tried today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable numerical game that should attract curious minds who appreciate puzzle games such as Threes or other New York Times offerings like Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article introducing Digits and outlining the development process by The New York Times Games team, The Times stated that the team would use this free beta to address bugs and evaluate whether it should proceed to a more active development stage "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." So take the chance to play Digits while you can, as The New York Times may discontinue the project if the reception isn’t as positive as anticipated.
Digits' beta is currently available to play for free on The New York Times Games' website.
