The highly-anticipated Fable has been pushed back to 2026. This announcement was made on the Official Xbox Podcast during an interview with Craig Duncan. “We initially set the release date for Fable as 2025, but we’ve decided to allocate more time for its development, and it will now launch in 2026. While I understand this might not be the news fans were hoping for, I want to assure everyone that it will be worth the wait.”

This news is disappointing for fans eager to experience the game. Rumors about the game first emerged in 2018, and Playground Games officially revealed the reboot in July 2020. By 2026, the game will have been in development for at least eight years. Duncan mentioned that the game is “very playable,” but he was cautious about sharing too many specifics to avoid giving away too much.

He praised the visuals, referring to the game as “the most beautifully realized version of Albion you’ve ever seen.” This isn’t surprising, as the current trailers showcase a richly detailed world filled with vibrant colors, which is expected from the studio known for Forza Horizon.

      Fable: Pre-Alpha Gameplay

Duncan reassured listeners that Fable remains true to its roots. “No one is a bigger fan of the Fable franchise than the Playground team making this game. It’s all about balancing the core elements that define Fable with a modern reinterpretation from Playground Games.”

We also caught a preview of some pre-alpha gameplay, which indicates that the game will retain the quirky humor that fans love from the Fable series. The demonstration even concluded with the player character kicking a chicken—something that, as The Legend of Zelda has shown, is not advisable.

The release window is set for 2026, but we hope to receive a more specific timeframe soon. In the meantime, there are numerous new titles available to satisfy your fantasy RPG cravings.

New Fable game set to blend classic and contemporary concepts

The new installment in the Fable series, revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase last week, aims to incorporate new gameplay mechanics while respecting the franchise’s legacy. Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios, spoke with The Guardian about the game, which was originally developed by Lionhead—a studio closed by Microsoft in 2016. The development is now in the hands of Playground Games, renowned for the Forza Horizon series. Booty explained that Microsoft chose Playground due to their expertise in creating open-world environments in their games.
