Keanu Reeves announces that Constantine 2 is officially set to proceed.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Twenty years ago this month, Keanu Reeves starred in Constantine, a film adaptation of DC’s Hellblazer comic featuring an occult investigator named John Constantine. Despite earlier reports indicating a sequel was in development, Constantine 2 has struggled to progress in Hollywood’s development Hell. However, according to Reeves, the sequel might finally be ready to move forward.
“We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade,” Reeves shared with Inverse. “We recently assembled a story and pitched it to DC Studios, who responded positively. So, we’re aiming to write a script.”
In September 2022, Deadline reported that Constantine 2 was in the works with Reeves set to return alongside director Francis Lawrence and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who produced the original film. The initial movie altered several aspects of the source material to fit Reeves’ casting, including changing Constantine's nationality from British to American and giving him dark hair instead of blond.
The plot of the first film centered on Constantine's efforts to assist Detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) in uncovering the reasons behind her twin sister's suicide. In the process, they discovered a plot to unleash Hell on Earth. Supporting roles were played by Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Djimon Hounsou, while Peter Stormare famously portrayed Lucifer.
Earlier this month, Lawrence informed Collider that “we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is exciting... We have gone through various comics over the years and explored different ideas.” He remarked that Constantine 2 had been “on our minds for 20 years as we’ve been brainstorming stories, characters, and concepts we cherish.”
DC Studios has not yet officially announced Constantine 2. If it proceeds, it will remain distinct from the newly rebooted DC Universe films, which are set to begin with the premiere of James Gunn’s Superman on July 11.

3 Keanu Reeves Netflix movies you should watch now
Aside from his grounded off-screen demeanor, fans have embraced Keanu Reeves as a cult-classic action and comedy actor over the last decade. His resurgence in popularity has been fueled by the successful and ongoing John Wick action series, with Reeves and director Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4 receiving widespread critical acclaim and becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise, amassing $432 million at the box office.
While Netflix's collection of his films is somewhat limited, it features a distinctive selection for subscribers to enjoy. From the campy Eastern fantasy 47 Ronin to his supporting role in the charming romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe, there are several noteworthy Keanu Reeves films on Netflix.
47 Ronin (2013)
One of the delights of Netflix is that films that initially struggled to attract an audience can sometimes find a second chance to engage viewers. This is true for 47 Ronin, the 2013 action film featuring Keanu Reeves. As of this posting, 47 Ronin has climbed to No. 4 on Netflix's top 10 most popular films of the week. If you haven't watched it yet, here’s why 47 Ronin is worth your time on Netflix.
The movie 47 Ronin is loosely based on a true story from 17th-century Japan, where a lord was compelled to commit suicide by a rival. In retaliation, 47 of the lord's disgraced samurai devised a lengthy plan to avenge their fallen master, fully aware that their actions were illegal and that they would face death if they succeeded. While the film infuses fantasy elements into the narrative, the most pivotal addition was Reeves himself.
47 Ronin showcases one of Keanu Reeves’ finest performances
What defines a great action hero? Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (FUBAR) relied on their physical strength and presence. Jackie Chan (Rush Hour) and Jean-Claude Van Damme (Bloodsport) utilized martial arts skills, while Bruce Willis (Die Hard) and Kurt Russell (Escape from New York) demonstrated that wit and grit are essential traits. Nowadays, most action stars in 2023 are often found in superhero costumes.
In contrast, there’s Keanu Reeves (John Wick), who might be the most unanticipated action star of all time, surpassing even Willis. At first glance, Reeves appears to be a relatable, good-looking everyman one wouldn’t expect to take down a crime syndicate or save the world. His calm, stoic demeanor paired with his diligent work ethic makes Reeves a credible hero. Yet, there is no doubt that Reeves is an action star and one of the finest in Hollywood since 1990.
