Observe one of the most bizarre 'science experiments' that has ever occurred in space.
In what some may consider the most significant microgravity experiment ever conducted on the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronaut Don Pettit attempted to put on a pair of pants without using his hands — by floating into them. Pettit, who is more recognized for his exceptional space photography than for research involving clothing, shared multiple videos on his social media over the weekend, showcasing his efforts to explore some fascinating questions about wearing pants in space.
The first question he posed was: “Can you put on pants using both legs at once?” On Earth, gravity makes putting on pants a tricky task, often performed without finesse and sometimes requiring a seated position, depending on one’s balancing abilities.
In his initial video, Pettit is shown gliding towards his pants, stabilizing himself before taking hold of the garment, lifting both legs, and successfully sliding into both pant legs simultaneously. Attempting this on Earth could likely lead to injury, but in the microgravity environment of the ISS, Pettit manages to perform the task effortlessly.
Later, responding to requests from his social media followers, he tries to enter his pants in one fluid motion, using no hands. You'll have to check the video to see if he succeeds.
Pettit has been aboard the space station since September, and throughout his stay, he has been captivating audiences on Earth with his impressive photography, sharing breathtaking images of our planet and beyond. He may soon provide insights into his unusual scientific explorations conducted in microgravity, as well.

Experience the awe-inspiring view of an aurora from above!
Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) recently enjoyed another mesmerizing spectacle in the form of an aurora shimmering above Earth. This beautiful event was documented by NASA astronaut Don Pettit as the ISS flew over the aurora at roughly 250 miles in altitude.
Astronaut’s ‘glowing fingernail clipping’ is, in fact, the moon!
Don Pettit continues to impress. Just days after sharing an incredible image of Earth, the American astronaut followed up with a striking photograph of a waning crescent moon, which he described as “a glowing fingernail clipping in the sky.”
Astronaut’s inaugural photo of 2025 is truly remarkable!
NASA astronaut Don Pettit has begun 2025 with a breathtaking photo of Earth that he labeled a “New Year’s light show.” He captured this stunning image from the International Space Station (ISS), where he has been stationed since September on his fourth journey to space.
