Step aside, Wordle: The New York Times has launched a new puzzle game.
The New York Times has unveiled the next game joining its Games catalog following the success of Wordle—this one revolves around math. Digits requires players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers, and you can play its beta online for free right now.
In Digits, players receive a target number they must match. Presented with six numbers, they can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to get as close to that target as possible. Not every number needs to be used, making this game a good test of your math skills as you combine numbers and craft the right equations.
Players receive a five-star rating for an exact match with the target number, three stars if within 10, and one star if within 25 of the target number. Currently, players have access to five different puzzles, each featuring larger numbers. I completed today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-focused game that should attract curious minds who appreciate puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles like Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article introducing Digits and explaining The New York Times Games team's approach to game development, The Times states that they will use this free beta to identify bugs and determine if it's worthwhile to progress into a more active development stage "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." So, make sure to play Digits while you can, as The New York Times may abandon the project if it doesn’t receive the desired response.
Digits' beta is available for free on The New York Times Games' website.

It was a standout success story in gaming, appealing to a wide audience with its elegant simplicity.
