Microsoft is getting ready for significant updates to GPT-5 from OpenAI.
Microsoft is preparing for a significant AI update and is enhancing its server capacity to accommodate the next version of OpenAI's models. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the organization is expected to release the GPT-4.5 large language model within the next few weeks, with reports from the Verge suggesting it might be available "as early as next week." Similar to earlier technological progress, OpenAI claims that GPT-4.5 will be notably more advanced than its predecessor, GPT-4. This model, referred to as Orion, is anticipated to be OpenAI’s final "non-chain-of-thought model." It is also set to pave the way for the upcoming flagship GPT-5 model, which will feature significant functional updates and will influence how partners like Microsoft integrate the technology.
Microsoft is scheduled to receive the GPT-5 code in May; however, the timeline is not confirmed. Earlier reports indicated that OpenAI originally aimed to launch GPT-4.5 in late 2024, but that release was postponed. In the meantime, OpenAI has started rolling out a series of reasoning models that differ from large language models by requiring less training to achieve better outcomes. This approach has allowed the company to regularly introduce multiple new reasoning models in both standard and mini versions within a short timeframe.
Nonetheless, the GPT-4o model faced challenges with subscription-based AI functionalities on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. The team at the company struggled to figure out how to incorporate specific speech and translation features. However, engineers are expected to resolve these issues given sufficient time, as reported by Android Headlines.
OpenAI's latest reasoning models are the o3 and o3 mini models. The organization plans to merge its large language models and reasoning models to eliminate confusion and move closer to its objective of attaining artificial general intelligence (AGI). Presently, users have to choose a model based on the type of processing outcome they seek. However, with GPT-5, integration with o3 mini is expected to enable users to access the benefits of both models in a single option. Altman recently shared his frustration on X regarding the overwhelming number of different AI models available on his platform, expressing his belief in the "magic of unified intelligence."

OpenAI is nearing completion of its custom chip design. The company is preparing to enter the custom component market in 2025 and is currently negotiating with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to produce the first generation of its proprietary AI-based silicon, as reported exclusively by Reuters. The AI startup aims to create custom chips to reduce its reliance on Nvidia's AI chips. Sources informed Reuters that OpenAI is finalizing its chip design, expected to be complete in the upcoming months, in collaboration with Broadcom. The internal team of 40 people is led by former Google engineering head, Richard Ho.

During a panel discussion at Technische Universität Berlin last week, Sam Altman predicted that ChatGPT-5 would surpass his intelligence, stating he wouldn't be smarter than GPT-5. He also engaged with the audience, asking who considered themselves smarter than GPT-4 and who believed they would be smarter than GPT-5. "I don’t think I’m going to be smarter than GPT-5. And I don’t feel sad about it because I think it just means that we’ll be able to use it to do incredible things. We want more scientific advancements; we want to empower researchers to achieve things they couldn’t before. This reflects humanity’s long history." The exchange appeared somewhat rehearsed, particularly since he directed it in response to an unrelated question. When asked about his expectations for partnerships with research organizations, he replied with enthusiasm, focusing on the potential impact of AI on scientific discovery.
