      The New York Times has unveiled a new addition to its Games catalog following the ongoing popularity of Wordle — this time, it focuses on mathematics. Digits requires players to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on numbers. You can currently play its beta version for free online. In Digits, players receive a target number they must match. They are provided six numbers and can utilize addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to get as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers need to be used, which adds a layer of complexity as players combine numbers to formulate equations nearing the target number. Players earn a five-star rating for matching the target number precisely, a three-star rating if they are within 10, and a one-star rating if they are within 25 of the target number. Additionally, players can access five unique puzzles featuring progressively larger numbers. I completed today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-based game likely to attract enthusiasts of puzzle games such as Threes or other New York Times titles like Wordle and Spelling Bee. In an article introducing Digits and illustrating The New York Times Games team's development process, the Times mentions that they will use this free beta to troubleshoot and evaluate whether it merits progression into a more active development state "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." Therefore, play Digits while available, as The New York Times may decide to discontinue the project if it does not receive the anticipated feedback.
