The top sci-fi films available on Max at the moment.
Great news for Max subscribers who enjoy sci-fi films: Max has added some new science-fiction titles this month. This is a welcome improvement compared to the scarcity of fresh selections in January. As a bonus, both new films—Dredd and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets—are currently among the top movies on Max. Hopefully, this will encourage Warner Bros. Discovery to invest more in this genre in the future.
You can explore the rest of the top sci-fi movies available on Max below, which also includes a few titles borrowed from Disney’s 20th Century Studios. These movies won’t be available on Max indefinitely, so be sure to watch The Martian and Rise of the Planet of the Apes before they leave.

**Dredd**
Entertainment Film Distributors
Year: 2012
Runtime: 1 hour, 36 minutes
Director: Pete Travis
American fans are often surprised to discover that Judge Dredd is a comic book icon in the UK, comparable to Batman. The Judge Dredd comics present a grim vision of America’s future in a place called Mega-City One, where Judges serve as both police officers and prosecutors, administering sentences on the spot. The 1995 film featuring Sylvester Stallone failed to capture this dystopian concept as effectively as the 2012 reboot did.
Although Dredd lacks the big budget of its predecessor, it boasts thrilling action and a strong lead duo, with Karl Urban (of The Boys) as Judge Dredd and Olivia Thirlby as rookie Judge Cassandra Anderson. During a training mission, Dredd and Anderson become trapped in a high-rise apartment complex controlled by drug lord Ma-Ma Madrigal (Lena Headey from Game of Thrones), who has placed a high bounty on their heads, attracting attention from potential allies.

**Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets**
STXfilms
Year: 2017
Runtime: 2 hours, 17 minutes
Director: Luc Besson
The French sci-fi comic Valerian and Laureline has inspired numerous filmmakers, including George Lucas. In 2017, director Luc Besson tried to turn the pair into movie stars, but only Valerian got the title billing in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The film’s title references Alpha, known to us as the International Space Station. Set eight centuries in the future, the ISS has transformed into a vibrant space city with representatives from across the universe.
However, this city hides a sinister secret that troubles Valerian (Dane DeHaan), who would rather pursue romance with his partner, Laureline (Cara Delevingne). While investigating reports of a hazardous zone within Alpha, Valerian and Laureline uncover information that could jeopardize everything humanity has built on the station.

**Time Bandits**
HandMade Films
Year: 1981
Runtime: 1 hour, 57 minutes
Director: Terry Gilliam
Forget the Time Bandits TV revival from Apple TV+; Terry Gilliam’s original Time Bandits movie is a visually stunning and imaginative experience that the show cannot match. The story follows a boy named Randall (David Rappaport) who teams up with a group of dwarves, led by Fidgit (Kenny Baker from Star Wars), who possess a map allowing them to travel through time. They turn into thieves, stealing from various periods during their adventures.
Throughout their journeys, Randall and his companions encounter historical figures such as Robin Hood (John Cleese), Agamemnon (Sean Connery), and Napoleon (Ian Holm). They have also angered the Supreme Being (Ralph Richardson) and attracted the attention of Evil (David Warner from Tron), who wants the map for himself.
