Almost 50 years later, this classic Atari game is returning with a new twist.

Breakout Beyond is a newly reimagined take on the classic Atari game Breakout, developed by Choice Provisions, featuring a unique twist. The objective remains to destroy all the bricks on the screen, but now levels are approached from the side rather than from below.

You may recognize Choice Provisions from their BIT.TRIP series of rhythm games. The game offers light trails following the ball, with bricks exploding in stylish flashes, all set to an electro-synth soundtrack reminiscent of Geometry Wars. It will launch with 72 different levels and an “endless” mode that includes an online leaderboard. There’s also the option to play cooperatively with a friend in a two-player mode.

A new element is the introduction of special bricks, which may cause significant explosions that eliminate nearby blocks or provide a limited-time cannon capable of easily destroying bricks. Players can also gain a barrier that keeps the ball active. Building combos not only increases your score but also creates a visual lightshow on the screen.

Originally slated for release in 2020 on the now-defunct Intellivision Amico, Breakout Beyond will now be available on a console you can actually buy. The game is set for release this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and, predictably, the Atari VCS.

Unfortunately, there is no specific release window or price information available yet. You can add Breakout Beyond to your wishlist on Steam to receive notifications upon its launch. The good news is that even older computers can run this game comfortably, as its system requirements are minimal despite its vibrant graphics.

A beloved feature is making a return to Mortal Kombat after nearly 30 years

The Mortal Kombat 1 game is set to become even more formidable, as fan-favorite animalities are making a comeback after a 29-year absence in a free update. This update was announced during the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, alongside the more significant Khaos Reigns expansion announcement.

Yars Rising is the revival that an Atari 2600 classic deserves

Though I missed the original Yars' Revenge on the Atari 2600, having been released long before my time, Yars Rising caught my attention as a newcomer with its vibrant visuals and Metroidvania classification. This bold reimagining caters to both nostalgic fans of the original and new players unfamiliar with the series. During a hands-on demo at Summer Game Fest, I experienced an early segment of the game, battled my first boss, and tried out several new abilities that illustrate the depth of the Metroidvania genre.

Yars Rising doesn't restrict itself to just 2D space shooting; it develops a complete narrative and world that modernizes the Yars story for new audiences. Its panel-style cutscenes echo the Yars comics that accompanied the original Yars' Revenge, featuring text bubbles and exaggerated characters that align with the lighthearted tone communicated through the dialogue. The characters resemble those found in animated shows: vibrant and expressive, yet a bit campy. While I don't expect an intricate story, it provides enough context through the exchanges to justify your quest.
