Acer has discovered a method to enhance gaming handhelds by transforming one into a compact laptop. The company has introduced Project DualPlay Mini, a unique concept that alternates between a handheld gaming apparatus and a small productivity device.
Unveiled at IFA 2026, the prototype features an 8-inch display and integrated gaming controls along with a flip-and-swivel mechanism that uncovers a physical keyboard. Acer is promoting the device as both a portable gaming system and a Windows-style PC, although detailed specifications and a release date have yet to be announced.
This concept isn’t entirely novel. Brands like Ayaneo, OneXPlayer, and GPD have previously explored handheld-laptop hybrids. However, Acer distinguishes itself with an innovative design, allowing the gaming controls and display to physically shift into a traditional laptop layout rather than simply connecting to an external keyboard.
One device, two distinctly different modes of use
The flip-and-swivel mechanism of Project DualPlay Mini is its standout feature. In handheld mode, it functions like a standard portable gaming device, with controls located on either side of the 8-inch screen.

When flipped into laptop mode, a backlit physical keyboard emerges beneath the display. Acer indicates that the controls are optimized for slower-paced games not requiring pinpoint accuracy, while the keyboard caters to FPS and MOBA genres where quick and precise inputs can be crucial.
The device also has the capability to connect to an external display, enabling it to manage productivity tasks—potentially allowing a single compact device to function as both a gaming handheld and a PC.
However, there is a clear limitation. An 8-inch display combined with a small keyboard might be sufficient for responding to emails or making quick edits, but engaging in serious work could prove challenging.
Acer has yet to disclose the specific processor, memory, storage, or other fundamental specifications. The only confirmation is that the prototype utilizes an Intel processor. Notebookcheck suggests that it might feature an Intel Arc G3-series chip, although a standard Panther Lake processor cannot be discounted. Cooling is managed by two fans, including an Acer Predator AeroBlade metal fan.

The main caveat is that Project DualPlay Mini is explicitly a proof of concept. There is currently no release timeline, and Acer hasn’t guaranteed that the device will ever be available for retail.

Nonetheless, the concept emerges at a compelling moment for handheld gaming PCs. There is a growing expectation that devices should replace more than just a traditional console, and Acer’s proposal takes that notion to its utmost limit. Instead of carrying both a handheld and a laptop, one might potentially transport a single device that fulfills both roles.
Whether there is demand for typing on an 8-inch laptop remains to be seen. However, as a concept, Project DualPlay Mini illustrates that the handheld PC is evolving beyond merely serving as a gaming gadget.
