A smartwatch capable of accurately measuring real blood pressure levels is on the horizon, and it has a stylish design.

      A more streamlined medical-grade smartwatch for tracking blood pressure is set to be launched next week.

      Huawei recently showcased its upcoming blood pressure smartwatch, which moves away from the bulky designs that have characterized this category since 2021.

      The Watch D3 made an unexpected debut at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich this week, just days before its official unveiling on September 2. In contrast to most smartwatches that approximate blood pressure using wrist sensors, this model provides actual readings.

      The Watch D3 features an inflatable strap with a small built-in pump, effectively miniaturizing a traditional blood pressure cuff for your wrist. Huawei first introduced this design with the original Watch D in 2021, later enhancing it with 24-hour ambulatory monitoring in the Watch D2 in 2024.

      This latest generation smartwatch has a case thickness reduced to approximately 11.4mm, down from 13.3mm on the D2, putting it on par with the Apple Watch Ultra's more robust profile. It also boasts a larger 1.92-inch display and a 540mAh battery, which offers about six days of usage. The Watch D3 will reportedly come with black, white, or brown straps paired with either a silver or gold body.

      Huawei claims the watch now provides more precise readings even during heart rate spikes and can suggest workout intensity based on your blood pressure readings surrounding exercise. It also prompts you to take a reading during significant temperature fluctuations or high-altitude excursions, and the product has CE MDR certification within the European Union.

      The Watch D3 includes enhanced Health Glance metrics, along with improved sleep and emotional wellness tracking. It vibrates every 30 minutes to remind users to check in and continues to function while you sleep. Apple is looking into similar hypertension alerts for its upcoming Watch models, though without dedicated hardware like that of the Watch D3. The expected price is around 449 Euros, with a launch in the US still appearing unlikely.

      The Apple Watch already monitors your heart closely during workouts, but Apple may soon offer continuous monitoring throughout the day. According to Bloomberg’s latest Power On newsletter, Apple is testing a feature that would enable the Watch to gather heart rate data continuously.

      Currently, the sensor operates continuously during exercise, while outside of workouts, it collects readings periodically based on activity. The new method would maintain workout-level heart rate monitoring consistently, potentially making it a more valuable upgrade than it initially seems.

      Apple seems to be taking its time with the next major redesign of the Apple Watch. Although this fall’s Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are shaping up to be relatively minor updates, Apple is reportedly aiming for a more substantial overhaul that could come as soon as next year, albeit possibly delayed to 2028.

      The latest information from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that Apple is continuing to work on a redesigned Apple Watch while preparing smaller upgrades for this year. Therefore, anyone expecting a dramatically different watch in the next generation might be disappointed, although there will still be some intriguing changes ahead.
