Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold may no longer be available in stores, but the competition in the tri-folding phone market remains strong. Huawei has started accepting reservations in China for the Mate XT 2, ahead of its official launch on September 7. The price is still undisclosed, but Huawei has announced the available colors, memory options, and a significant redesign that could enhance its practicality compared to earlier models.
While enhancing durability was a key goal, the design is truly eye-catching. The Mate XT 2 will be available in Dark Black, Pure White, and Jin Purple. The black and white variants feature gold-colored frames, whereas the purple model stands out as the highlight. Huawei's Ultimate Design phones have consistently had a premium look, and this model continues that trend.
Huawei is committing further to the tri-fold concept.
The original Mate XT utilized a Z-shaped folding mechanism, leaving part of its flexible display exposed when closed. While we found this design impressive during our hands-on experience, an exposed folding screen inevitably raises concerns about durability. To address this for the new model, Huawei is making it even more robust.
The approximately 10-inch flexible display now folds inward from both sides, while an additional screen on the outside handles regular phone functions. This design is akin to Samsung's approach with the Galaxy Z TriFold, where the device's closure protects the entire flexible panel within.
The company is highlighting durability, showcasing the Mate XT 2 in promotional videos where it undergoes multiple drops and is exposed to pressurized water (though the official IP rating is still unknown).

All currently advertised configurations of the Mate XT 2 feature 16GB of RAM, with either 512GB or 1TB of storage. There is also a 1TB variant equipped with Huawei's privacy-screen technology. The purple Mate XT 2 can be customized with 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage, incorporating the privacy display and a bundled stylus. Huawei has yet to disclose the pricing for any of these configurations.
Reservations are currently limited to China. Standard configurations are expected to ship by October 31, and Huawei will provide more details at its launch event on September 7. However, we anticipate that the price will be quite high. The original Mate XT was launched at approximately $2,800, similar to Samsung’s initial price of $2,899 for the Galaxy Z TriFold. Regardless, it quickly sold out following a deliberately limited production run. Samsung is reportedly working on a new generation with a redesigned hinge, but that successor has not been officially announced.
Conversely, Huawei is already moving forward with its successor, having opened reservations for its XT tri-fold. If the purple version impresses in person, Samsung’s upcoming successor has a glamorous benchmark to aim for.
