Even though HTTPS secures your activity on a website, your internet service provider and anyone monitoring the connection can still see the specific sites and apps you are accessing. This privacy vulnerability has been present for years, and Google is addressing it with four significant network security enhancements in Android 17.
How Android 17's Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) prevents ISP tracking
Your device has been publicly revealing its destination all along. Whenever you connect to a website, there’s a moment during the handshake known as the TLS ClientHello, where your device openly communicates which domain it intends to visit, in clear, readable text. Anyone monitoring the network, including your ISP, can interpret this information.
Encrypted Client Hello encrypts that data, rendering it unreadable to anyone except the site you are visiting. When combined with Private DNS, your ISP loses the capability to track your online activities or compile a profile based on your browsing history. Android is the first major mobile operating system to implement this broadly, developed alongside Jigsaw, with support from OkHttp 5.5.0.
Three additional security features in Android 17
In addition to ECH, Android 17 includes three more upgrades that address smaller but still significant privacy issues:
Local Network Protection prevents apps from discreetly scanning your home Wi-Fi network to identify devices such as smart TVs, security cameras, or other connected gadgets without your consent.
Certificate Transparency, which is now enforced by default, necessitates that every website certificate be publicly logged, making it more difficult for a compromised or rogue certificate authority to issue fraudulent certificates and intercept your traffic undetected.
Zero-click 2G protection safeguards against scams. Criminals utilize devices known as SMS blasters to switch nearby phones onto outdated, insecure 2G networks, then send out phishing texts that escape modern spam filters. Android 17 allows participating carriers to disable 2G by default, automatically shutting down this entire method of attack without any action required from you.
Together, these four updates will close some of the most significant privacy vulnerabilities that still exist in how your phone connects to the internet.
