Metro 2039 lacks heroes. It exchanges hope for vengeance, and I fully support this new approach.

      Metro Exodus dedicated a significant portion of its narrative to establishing that this series could thrive beyond the confines of the Moscow Metro. Artyom was always a visionary, yearning for a better future for those in the Metro. And despite numerous challenges, hope emerged as a dominant theme if players made the right decisions in Exodus.

      So, what is it about Metro 2039 that is pulling me back in? It’s not merely the title and setting that are enticing; rather, it’s how it plunges us deeper into the grim universe of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro series. During Gamescom Opening Night Live, 4A Games released a new Renegade gameplay trailer, bringing the new hero, The Stranger, back into focus.

      In the trailer, we see him navigating the independent Sevastopolskaya station, exploring the irradiated Moscow while battling both mutants and humans. The latest footage starkly presents the brutality of the world, a reminder that Artyom is no longer present. Reflecting on the shared DNA between the original Metro 2033 and GSC Game World’s Stalker, I find this precisely how I want my Metro experience.

      The tunnels have evidently picked up some lessons from Exodus.

      The prominent new location, Sevastopolskaya, reappears in the Renegade trailer. 4A describes it as an independent station that is gradually destabilizing from within due to propaganda and alcohol, while Raiders backed by Novoreich exert external pressure. The Stranger arrives there in pursuit of information tied to his enigmatic target.

      Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the game feels significantly more interactive, thereby enhancing the immersive experience. For instance, the breaching tool used by The Stranger introduces new gameplay mechanics. Additionally, a new UV light can reveal hidden mutants, repel flying Insectalis, and uncover codes in environmental puzzles.

      While I enjoyed exploring expansive environments in Exodus, Metro 2039 seems to be rekindling that sense of curiosity within more confined spaces. The new Shatun pneumatic rifle fits perfectly in the Metro universe, requiring careful pumping to maintain its power, adding another mechanical concern while faced with imminent danger.

      Something unusual continues to lurk beneath the surface.

      What stood out to me in the trailer was everything pertaining to The Stranger. Donning Spartan armor, 4A portrays him as a traumatized individual whose focus is primarily on his mission rather than on helping those suffering under Hunter’s Novoreich regime. One line succinctly encapsulates his character:

      The Spartans were wolves in helmets. But I’m something worse.

      Then there’s the intriguing element that has piqued my interest. As Hunter’s propaganda echoes its demand for the annihilation of the enemy, the Dark Ones’ voices join in. The trailer stops short of clarifying what this implies, leaving a supernatural thread hovering over The Stranger’s violent waking nightmares. Unlike before, the Dark Ones now seem overtly hostile instead of merely enigmatic.

      I was already captivated by the increased strangeness and eldritch quality of its post-apocalyptic environment. This trailer equally hints at promising gameplay elements. Metro 2039 is set to be released in February 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC, though a specific date has yet to be revealed.
