Claude outage affects several models once more.

      Anthropic’s Claude AI is experiencing overload issues once again. On Monday morning, users attempting to interact with Claude faced failed requests along with a “529 Overloaded” error. The notification indicates a temporary server-side issue and directs users to Anthropic’s status page. A screenshot shared with TNW illustrates the error appearing within the Claude interface.

      Anthropic’s incident report reveals a more general and cautious approach. At 05:06 UTC on August 24, the company announced it was investigating increased errors impacting requests for Claude Mythos 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 5, and Claude Opus 4.8. This incident also affects claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.

      By 05:27 UTC, Anthropic reported that it had pinpointed the problem and was in the process of implementing a fix. The most recent update, posted at 06:42 UTC, states that the company continues to work toward resolving the issue. The status page does not currently offer a recovery timeline or a technical explanation.

      This distinction is important. The “529 Overloaded” error indicates what some users are experiencing, but Anthropic has not confirmed that overload is the underlying reason for the broader incident. At this point, the public record only indicates increased errors across multiple models and products, without knowing the cause.

      A Busy August for Claude

      This isn't the first service issue for Claude this month. Anthropic’s status history notes a degraded performance incident impacting several models on August 18, followed by another incident with Opus 5 and Haiku 4.5 on August 19. Another disruption affecting various models was reported on August 20.

      Independent reports have also highlighted the recent interruption. Frandroid noted that some users were unable to access Anthropic’s models, and the company had acknowledged the issue. Online conversations on Hacker News and other forums show users encountering the same 529 error while using Claude.

      These reports do not clarify the extent of the outage. However, they indicate how rapidly an infrastructure problem can become apparent: through failed chat requests, unsuccessful coding sessions, or API calls that require retries.

      Shared Infrastructure Costs

      Claude is no longer a single product but rather a suite of models available via consumer chat, developer tools, an API, and Cowork. When multiple interfaces fail concurrently, users perceive it as one unavailable dependency rather than separate incidents.

      This is the more significant narrative here. Anthropic has identified the cause, yet it has not specified if the issue resides in a shared service, model routing, capacity, or another component of the system. Any of these possibilities would be mere speculation at this time.

      The fix is still under observation. Until Anthropic provides further details, the question goes beyond simply when Claude will be restored. It involves whether users can rely on it without considering failure a part of the interface.

      For developers, this distinction may be crucial down the line. During the outage, the immediate question is more straightforward: whether to wait, retry, switch to another provider, or close the laptop and play with their cat.
