This launch occurs just weeks ahead of Apple's release of a restructured Siri based on Google's models. Rick Osterloh, the head of Google's devices, has stated that a memory shortage will drive up the prices of the Pixel devices.

      The Pixel 11 lineup emphasizes software capabilities rather than hardware. Gemini Intelligence is designed to understand users’ activities and connect services such as messages, calendars, and maps, allowing it to suggest or execute actions like checking availability or making restaurant reservations. Google aims to incorporate these features into the operating system instead of having them as part of a separate chatbot application.

      This situation places Google in a unique position, as it now competes directly with one of its major AI clients—Apple, which is also utilizing Gemini to enhance Siri and pursue similar objectives, such as comprehending personal context and interacting across applications.

      Rick Osterloh told CNBC that he believes Pixel and iPhone will diverge significantly in their development paths, highlighting unique features of Android and Gemini Intelligence, such as scam detection and Rambler voice transcription. He elaborated on the future implications of this technology, stating that it represents “a totally new way to interact with a computer,” which could eventually become the main method by which people use their devices.

      However, whether this results in increased phone sales remains uncertain. According to Counterpoint Research, AI ranks about sixth or seventh among the reasons for phone upgrades, having moved up slightly due to improvements in Gemini and Apple’s AI. Research director Tarun Pathak mentioned that the conversion of interest into actual upgrades will depend on increased awareness and practical use scenarios.

      Pathak also anticipates that Apple’s AI will spur upgrades, given that Apple has more generative AI-capable phones in circulation than any competing brand. Google has the opportunity to showcase their model first, while Apple will implement it on a larger scale.

      The launch also coincides with rising costs. Osterloh mentioned a clear “shortage of memory, both RAM and flash,” leading to price increases across the board, including for Google. This situation has been consistent since July, when RAM prices jumped from $2.80 per gigabyte to $12.

      This supply squeeze affects markets beyond smartphones, as AI data centers are consuming the available resources, resulting in the decline of budget smartphones and the discontinuation of the $599 Mac Mini.
