Bumble is allowing men to initiate contact, breaking the foundational rule it was established on.

Bumble is set to allow men to initiate conversations, changing the fundamental rule that the dating app was originally centered around. According to Bloomberg, an upcoming messaging update will enable men to open chats with opposite-sex matches, although the specifics of this change are still being finalized, and Bumble has not fully explained it yet.

For users of the app, this change is significant. Since its inception, Bumble has operated under a straightforward principle: in heterosexual matches, only women were allowed to send the first message. This inversion was positioned not just as a unique feature of the product but also as a small act of empowerment.

Now, the company is retracting that premise. When the female-focused app initially expanded beyond the United States, founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd established its identity around the notion that women should dictate the terms of the conversation, creating a feminist distinction from other similar swipe apps.

In 2024, Bumble softened this stance with the introduction of an “Opening Moves” feature, which allowed women to prepare prompts for potential matches to respond to; however, this new development goes much further than that.

The messaging alteration is part of a broader overhaul for 2026 that will impact nearly every aspect of user experience. Bumble intends to eliminate swiping altogether in certain markets by the fourth quarter and will instead focus on its “Bee” AI matchmaker, designed to understand users' relationship desires better. Additional changes include chapter-style profiles, an increased emphasis on real-life meetups, and a new cloud-based AI platform as part of this reinvention.

The motivation behind these changes is evident, as the statistics are concerning. In the first quarter of 2026, paying users declined by 21.1%, dropping to 3.2 million from four million the previous year, while total revenue fell 14.1% to $212.4 million. Revenue for the entirety of 2025 decreased about 10% to $966 million, and Bumble's stock has lost over 90% of its value since the company's initial public offering in 2021.

Bumble attributes this decline to a widespread sentiment they term “dating app fatigue," which seems most prevalent among Gen Z, the very demographic that every dating platform is striving to retain. Whether this fatigue represents a temporary trend or a fundamental shift in how young people connect is a concern for the entire industry, and it is a challenge not only facing Bumble, as competitors like Tinder and Hinge grapple with the same move away from endless swiping.

Wolfe Herd, who has returned to her previous role, has attempted to recast the decline as a strategic choice rather than a setback. She has characterized the dwindling user base as “a deliberate reset of our member base,” focusing on quality over quantity, and has informed investors that “it’s time for the next Bumble,” promising an innovation that would be “revolutionary for the category.”

This ambitious characterization of reversing the founding principle presents a clear tension, as Bumble has spent the last decade promoting the app as a means for women to gain control, and now it is dismantling the mechanism that made that promise a reality while facing significant commercial pressure.

The optimistic interpretation suggests that a rule that once seemed empowering had begun to feel burdensome, an additional task in an already tiring routine, and that doing away with it liberates women who may not have relished being the ones to initiate contact. Bumble prefers to frame this transition as a reduction of friction rather than a retreat from its core values.

The more pessimistic perspective is harder to dismiss. By removing the women-first rule, along with the AI matchmaker and the disappearing swipe feature, one might reasonably question what still differentiates Bumble from other dating platforms in an oversaturated, disillusioned market. Altering its course might rejuvenate the app, or it could quietly erase the very element that once set it apart.
