Grok’s image tools receive a professional enhancement featuring templates, accurate editing, and a second-place ranking in Arena.
SpaceXAI launched Grok Imagine Image 2.0 on Thursday, prioritizing editing capabilities. The update introduces a magic wand tool that modifies only the specified area, segmentation for selecting exact regions to edit, and background removal for exporting images with transparent backgrounds. The multi-reference editing feature allows up to five input images to be processed in one go, eliminating the need for manual compositing. Additionally, a smart-resize tool adjusts one image across nine different aspect ratios, filling in the additional space seamlessly.
The model now ranks second on Arena’s text-to-image and image-edit leaderboards, only behind OpenAI’s gpt-image-2. Following the release of Grok 4.5, the first coding model with Cursor last week, Image 2.0 further enhances their offerings in creative tools. The training of the model focused on maintaining fidelity across photography, design, and illustration, particularly in typography and layout to ensure dense visuals remain cohesive and small text is clear. Templates for various uses such as product photography, headshots, e-commerce listings, game assets, and marketing materials provide pre-made starting points for common tasks.
Image 2.0 is accessible in Quality Mode at grok.com/imagine and through the iOS and Android applications. API access is expected soon, although no specific date has been provided. The Arena rankings are based on the company's data from public leaderboards, with no external assessments beyond those rankings. OpenAI currently leads in both categories, with Google’s Gemini image submissions close behind. This release positions SpaceXAI's image tools in direct competition with OpenAI and Google in the creative sector, extending beyond just text and coding.
The timing of the launch is significant since xAI is currently contesting Minnesota's nudify ban in court and has been under regulatory scrutiny after Grok produced an estimated three million sexualized images in under two weeks, including many that appeared to depict minors. Although Image 2.0 does not directly tackle these issues, its focus on professional templates, product photography, and e-commerce indicates that SpaceXAI aims to steer the conversation about Grok's image tools towards commercial applications instead of the misuse cases that have largely shaped its reputation so far.
