In its inaugural month, Meowster claims to have generated tens of thousands of conversations without any paid marketing and, as of late June 2026, it has reportedly gained 10 million views on Japanese social media, with three videos surpassing 1 million views each.

      Founder and CEO Ann Yu articulates, “AI is merely the tool. The real question is not about the model's power; it’s about transforming these capabilities into something that genuinely feels alive.”

      Users may forget an app's name, overlook a feature update, or confuse one digital product with another. However, they tend to remember a small green dinosaur inquiring whether a lesson was completed and a pixelated pet that beeped for attention in the afternoon. Nostalgia is often linked to side characters, mascots, avatars, and quirky little creatures with expressions that make a product seem animated.

      This instinct reveals something valuable about contemporary technology. The digital tools that remain memorable are frequently those that feel less mechanical. While complexity has its place, memorability arises more from elements like tone, shape, color, and personality. An AI cat or digital pet embodies all these elements simultaneously.

      Character as Integral Design, Not Just Decoration

      Character-driven design has been part of digital culture for years, seen in games, virtual pets, sticker culture, and recurring app mascots. A recognizable figure can differentiate a product, providing it with a unique tone, rhythm, and social context. In the realm of AI, this becomes even more significant as many products share similar interfaces and conversation styles.

      Meowster is founded on the principle that character should influence the interaction itself, rather than solely serve as a decoration. The company has recently expanded on this idea with MeowTown, an online space filled with various AI cats. According to Meowster, each character has its own occupation, memories, resources, and social ties and continues to function even when the user has logged off.

      Yu explains that this was a purposeful choice. “Most AI characters are entirely shaped by the user. The more you interact, the more the character becomes tailored to you. Our cat is different. Its personality is shaped by its own experiences in MeowTown. The user is just one aspect of that character’s life. That’s why it can have its own perspective.”

      That perspective forms a key distinction of the product. Yu notes that the team did not aspire to create a system merely designed to agree with users. “Most AI products excel at agreeing with you. We intentionally wanted to avoid that. A cat that always complies is not really a cat. The friction is essential. It creates a relationship rather than just a service.”

      Memory is another integral aspect of this design. Instead of acting solely as a record of past conversations, it seeks to influence the ongoing relationship over time. “Memory is the cornerstone of any genuine relationship. People grow closer by remembering more about each other. When AI can do that—not just store data but really assess what matters—the entire experience shifts,” says Yu.

      MeowTown embodies this principle in a shared environment. The company indicates that public information—such as time, locations, prices, and events—is consistent across the town, while each character maintains distinct memories of users, other cats, and personal experiences. This allows characters to react differently to the same scenario while still existing in a constant shared context.

      The system is designed to prioritize certain memories as interactions accumulate. Meowster states that frequently revisited or significant experiences remain easily accessible to a character, while less critical information gradually fades from active memory without being permanently erased. In practical terms, the cat may recall frequent interactions with a user while allowing incidental exchanges to diminish.

      The company contends that this combination of enduring personality, selective friction, and memory-centric interaction encourages repeated use. Meowster notes that its most engaged 20% of users engage in approximately 425 conversations with their AI cat on average. The company also reports a daily active user count of 5,647 and a retention rate exceeding 30% over seven days.

      Japan's Continued Relevance

      Japan provides a valuable cultural reference, having demonstrated over decades that mascots and characters can possess genuine emotional and commercial significance without requiring extensive explanation.
