ChatGPT is transitioning to GPT-5.6 Luna as the standard model for free users, while paid accounts will have access to an enhanced GPT-5.6 Sol experience.
OpenAI has announced significant updates to ChatGPT for both free and paid tiers. The most notable changes are for free account users, who now enjoy unlimited chat capabilities. Additionally, the default conversation model has been updated to GPT-5.6 Luna.
Free accounts will also benefit from a new "think" button that allows users to engage in a thinking mode for questions requiring deeper reasoning and knowledge exploration. For those unfamiliar, the Luna model corresponds to the "nano" series of models that existed prior to the new naming convention introduced with the GPT-5.6 series earlier this year.
The Luna model features a context window of 1,050,000 tokens and has a knowledge cutoff date of February 16, 2026, along with support for reasoning. It is multi-modal, meaning it can handle both text and media inputs, although it currently does not support audio or video. Furthermore, while standard limits for uploading media apply to free account holders, text interactions are no longer capped.
Paid account users (Plus or Pro tier) will experience enhancements to the GPT-5.6 Sol model. OpenAI has stated, “We’ve updated GPT-5.6 Sol to better cater to that full range. It provides more focused responses, adjusts its detail level to correspond with the question, minimizes unnecessary formatting, and provides helpful corrections when simple agreement would not suffice.”
OpenAI asserts that GPT-5.6 Sol offers stronger, more definitive responses with fewer factual inaccuracies. Internal testing reportedly showed a 68% reduction in error rates compared to previous iterations. This model represents the cutting-edge in the GPT-5.6 lineup, positioned ahead of Luna and Terra.
In other news, Adobe has introduced a unified plugin for ChatGPT that links to over 70 tools across Photoshop, Premiere, and other creative applications. Additionally, the ChatGPT-powered Atlas browser is set to shut down soon, with the official Chrome extension preparing to take its place and introduce new features.
