Adobe has integrated over 70 of its tools into ChatGPT.

Adobe's entire business revolves around the applications that creative professionals use daily. This week, the company integrated over 70 of those tools into a competitor's chatbot. Adobe has introduced a single plugin for ChatGPT that incorporates Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Express, and its Firefly generative models.

This development replaces the various individual connectors that Adobe provided last year via OpenAI’s Apps SDK. Now, there is a single extension that can be accessed through ChatGPT’s settings and activated by typing @Adobe. Starting today, it is available globally.

      What it does

Users can describe a task in simple language, and the plugin determines which Adobe tools are required. It then operates these tools in the background. For example, you can apply a uniform style across multiple product images, resize a design for various platforms, or convert a spreadsheet into an Acrobat PDF. If you provide a long video, the plugin can create a highlight reel and reformat it for Shorts, Reels, or TikTok.

The plugin can be used without an account, but signing into a Creative Cloud account unlocks additional features, such as saving progress across sessions and generating images with Firefly. Adobe claims it performs optimally within OpenAI’s Codex app and the newly launched Work suite, as reported by Engadget. The amount you can generate will depend on your ChatGPT subscription plan.

      A tool embedded in a competitor's platform

The real story lies in the strategy. The chatbot is becoming the starting point for users' work, and Adobe prefers to be accessible within ChatGPT rather than risk losing users who might not open Photoshop again. They are positioning themselves within a competitor’s platform before that platform completely takes over workflow.

Adobe is careful to maintain a distinction.

“We want Adobe’s professional-grade tools for creativity and productivity to be accessible wherever individuals work,” stated Forest Key, Vice President of Firefly and Agentic AI. He emphasized that the plugin “isn’t a replacement” for the main applications, which offer more depth when detailed precision is necessary. Product lead Deepti Pradeep described it as a pathway back to Adobe’s own applications in an interview with CNET.

For OpenAI, the rationale is straightforward. Every task it can incorporate into ChatGPT adds a reason for users to remain within the app, supporting its goal of becoming the tool that users never close.

      The balancing act

There is a caveat, which Adobe acknowledges. The plugin will not deliver perfectly precise results, as noted by Digital Trends, and the main applications remain the best option for accuracy. There is also a more complex tension; Adobe is integrating generative AI more deeply into its products through Firefly and new Photoshop features, even though many professional creatives are resistant to generative tools.

The company is gambling on being both the creative engine for the chatbot and a reliable studio for professionals. The risk lies in the possibility that the first could make the second feel unnecessary.
