WhatsApp Web now allows your laptop to manage calls, eliminating the need to return to your phone.

      Among the other new features are Waiting Room, QuickHD, and background Noise Suppression.

      I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve awkwardly had to pick up my phone mid-task just to take a WhatsApp call because the web version on my laptop couldn't support it. Today’s update resolves that issue for good.

      So what’s being introduced today?

      WhatsApp Web is now equipped with voice and video calling capabilities, including one-on-one and group calls without the need for any app downloads (which was necessary before). This feature has been in testing for several months. It was made available for group chats back in June, and now it’s being broadly rolled out to all users.

      Once it becomes available on your account, web calls will allow screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab displaying your complete call history and favorites, similar to what you already experience on mobile.

      All calls maintain end-to-end encryption, with no time constraints and no cost, just like WhatsApp's other services.

      What about the additional features WhatsApp mentioned?

      Call Transfer is a notable highlight. It enables you to shift an ongoing call between your phone and the web or desktop app without disconnecting or rejoining. This feature could prove useful if you begin a call while out and about; when you arrive home, you can switch to a larger display.

      Waiting Room gives hosts authority over who can join a call link, pausing participants until they receive approval to enter. Another new feature, QuickHD, enhances the speed at which video reaches full HD at the beginning of a call.

      There’s also a new Noise Suppression toggle that minimizes background noise so your voice is heard clearly. These additions build on recent enhancements like Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum audio controls available on the iPhone.

      It seems that WhatsApp is finally prioritizing call quality. While Zoom and Google Meet have been well-established in browsers, WhatsApp's effort to bridge this gap feels overdue, albeit a welcome change regardless.

      One might assume that receiving incorrect advice would make someone more cautious. However, new research indicates the contrary when that advice is provided by AI. A study led by Valerio Capraro, a psychology professor at the University of Milan-Bicocca, revealed that inaccurate AI recommendations decreased people's accuracy while notably boosting their confidence in their responses (via IBM Think). The study also found that individuals who received incorrect AI guidance were far less inclined to acknowledge their lack of knowledge, even when remaining silent was an option and accuracy was rewarded.

      Researchers have developed a tool capable of identifying the AI used to create a fake video

      Every AI video generator produces subtle, distinctive patterns, and this new tool has learned to interpret them.

      AI-generated videos have become so lifelike that detecting a fake is challenging enough. Determining which AI model created it is even more complex. This is precisely why researchers at UC Riverside created a tool that can accomplish both tasks. Named SAGA, it can trace a fake video back to the specific AI model that produced it.

      The project was led by UC Riverside doctoral researcher Rohit Kundu and electrical and computer engineering professor Amit K. Roy-Chowdhury, in collaboration with researchers from YouTube and Google DeepMind.
