WhatsApp Web now enables your laptop to manage calls, eliminating the need to return to your phone.

      Other new features introduced include Waiting Room, QuickHD, and background Noise Suppression.

      I’ve lost track of how many times I've had to awkwardly pick up my phone mid-task just to answer a WhatsApp call that my laptop couldn't manage on the web version. Today's update changes that for good.

      So what’s actually being released today?

      WhatsApp Web now supports voice and video calls, including both one-on-one and group calls without needing any app downloads (which was necessary before). This feature has been in testing for months, and group chat support rolled out back in June. Now, it's being made widely available to all users.

      Once enabled on your account, web calls will include screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab that consolidates your full call history and favorites, matching the functionality on mobile.

      Every call remains end-to-end encrypted, with no time limits or costs, just like all other WhatsApp services.

      What about the additional features WhatsApp highlighted?

      The standout feature is Call Transfer, which allows you to switch an active call between your phone and the web or desktop app without disconnecting or rejoining. This feature is useful if you begin a call while out and want to switch to a larger screen once you’re home.

      Waiting Room allows hosts to control who joins a call link, holding participants until they are approved for entry. Another new feature, QuickHD, enhances how quickly video reaches full HD at the start of a call.

      Additionally, there’s a new Noise Suppression option that eliminates background noise to ensure your voice is clear. All these new additions build upon recent enhancements such as Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum audio controls on iPhone.

      It seems that WhatsApp is finally prioritizing call quality. Although it feels overdue rather than groundbreaking, especially with Zoom and Google Meet already operating comfortably in browsers, this addition is still a welcome one.

      AI is complicating people's ability to say "I don't know."

A study led by Valerio Capraro, a psychology professor at the University of Milan-Bicocca, found that erroneous AI advice led individuals to respond with less accuracy, yet increased confidence in their answers (via IBM Think). The study also revealed that those receiving inaccurate AI guidance became significantly less inclined to admit they didn’t know an answer, even when remaining silent was an option and they were incentivized for accuracy.

For this reason, researchers at UC Riverside have developed a tool capable of accomplishing both. Named SAGA, this tool can trace a fake video back to the exact AI model responsible for its generation. The project was led by UC Riverside doctoral researcher Rohit Kundu and electrical and computer engineering professor Amit K.
