Qualcomm is planning to increase chip prices in September, which may impact the cost of your next gadget upgrade.

      According to a recent Bloomberg report, the price hikes will take effect on September 1, 2026. This means that any companies placing orders for chips after that date will face higher costs.

      Why is Qualcomm implementing these price increases now, and who is to blame?

      Qualcomm is not raising prices arbitrarily. The company has stated that it can no longer absorb the increased costs from its suppliers. Efforts to locate alternative sources for components have not yielded results.

      A significant rise in AI data center construction has drastically increased the demand for memory chips and semiconductors, which are also required for consumer devices.

      TSMC, the chip manufacturer for Qualcomm, Apple, Nvidia, and virtually all major players, has become the global chokepoint. While it is expanding its capacity, Wall Street predicts this supply crunch will persist into 2027.

      A recent report from Nikkei Asia suggested that Qualcomm might raise chip prices by 5% to 10%, depending on the chip type and the size of the order from the customer. Given that TSMC is Qualcomm’s primary manufacturer, it is expected that the company will pass on the price increases to maintain its profit margins.

      Essentially, any device equipped with a Snapdragon chip, which includes more products than many people might think.

      Flagship Android devices from manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus are the most obvious examples. However, Snapdragon chips are also increasingly used in Windows PCs, Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses and Quest headsets, the newly released Galaxy Watch 9, premium tablets, foldables, and more.

      Qualcomm’s extensive presence in the consumer electronics market emphasizes that this issue transcends just smartphones; it encompasses a broader consumer electronics narrative.
