Motorola might have created the iPad alternative that Android users have been anticipating.

Motorola has announced the Moto Pad 70, a new mid-range Android tablet featuring a large screen, stylus support, 5G connectivity, and a substantial battery.

This tablet is set to debut in India on August 8 via Flipkart. With its 12.1-inch 2.5K display, included Moto Pen, 10,200mAh battery, and 68W charging, it offers multiple features that may attract those looking at Apple’s entry-level iPad. However, its mid-range Dimensity 6400 processor suggests it may not reach the iPad's performance levels.

Could this serve as a more affordable iPad alternative?

Motorola seems to be focusing on value rather than sheer processing power. The 12.1-inch display is larger than that of Apple's standard iPad, and with a brightness of up to 800 nits and extensive DCI-P3 color coverage, it should be suitable for streaming, reading, and creative tasks.

The included Moto Pen enhances the tablet’s value. It features pressure sensitivity, tilt detection, and palm rejection, providing users with a complete setup for note-taking and drawing without needing to buy additional accessories. Motorola will also offer a magnetic keyboard case for typing and lighter office tasks.

A 10,200mAh battery is expected to support extended viewing or study periods, while 68W charging is quite rapid for a tablet in this segment. Motorola has managed to fit this into a slim 6.29mm frame weighing 530 grams, ensuring the large battery doesn’t add excessive bulk or weight. Quad speakers with Dolby Atmos and 5G connectivity increase its appeal as an entertainment device.

Performance where the Pad 70 falls short

The Dimensity 6400 should be adequate for browsing, streaming, video calls, note-taking, and general multitasking. However, it may struggle against Apple’s chips when it comes to demanding games, video editing, creative applications, and heavier tasks.

Motorola also promises only two major Android updates, though security updates will be available until 2030. The Moto Pad 70 bears a close resemblance to the Lenovo Idea Tab Plus, which was released last September at around 300 euros. Pricing in India often tends to be lower than what direct conversions indicate, allowing Motorola to price it comfortably below the base iPad.

At the right price point, its large display, included stylus, 5G capability, and rapid charging could make the performance compromise more palatable. As of now, it remains unclear whether Motorola plans to release this tablet outside of India.
