My wallet recoiled the moment I read “TSMC” and “price increase” in the same headline, and truthfully, yours should too.
It seems the company responsible for the chips powering nearly every flagship device, such as Apple’s A-series and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors, is reportedly set to increase prices slightly.
So, what does this price increase actually entail?
As reported by Nikkei Asia and later confirmed by Reuters, sources knowledgeable about TSMC's pricing strategy indicate that the company intends to raise chip prices between 5% and 10%, depending on the customer and the specific chip, starting in 2027.
That percentage might seem negligible until you crunch the numbers. A single 3nm wafer from TSMC, which is then sliced into individual chips, currently costs approximately $19,500. If that increases by 10%, the price jumps to around $21,450 per wafer.
Now, if you multiply that by the hundreds or even thousands of wafers a company like Apple or Qualcomm orders each year, that “small” percentage morphs into an actual significant amount. We could be discussing millions of dollars in added costs.
TSMC has not officially confirmed this, telling reporters that it doesn't discuss pricing strategies; however, a spokesperson acknowledged that the company's approach is “strategic, not opportunistic.”
Is this something that is genuinely happening, or just speculation?
I wouldn’t rule it out. TSMC's CEO has already mentioned the possibility of price increases, citing the ongoing demand for AI chips that won’t be fully met for years, while assuring that increases won’t occur “suddenly.” TSMC has raised prices in the past, which indicates this follows a trend rather than deviates from one.
Manufacturers reluctant to absorb the costs do have an alternative with Samsung’s 2nm process (which is the foundation of the Exynos 2600 chipset); however, switching foundries isn’t a quick solution.
I've already seen memory and storage prices contribute to rising device costs this year. With a TSMC price hike added on top, 2027 is looking like an even pricier year to upgrade any device equipped with a decent chip.
